I want to get a relatively inexpensive food source. I hear silversides are good, but where in San Antonio can I buy these or is there something else that I could buy from like HEB that would make a good substitute. I want to make up a recipe and also use it to feed an eel and a couple of anemones. And use the formula for corals. Anyone have some ideas?

When I had my lionfish and I fed him silversides I discovered that they are seasonal and not available all year. I dont know if they are in season or not right now but I always got mine at Gallery of Pets (duval & 183)

I use HEB often. I just hit the seafood section and buy a little of everything that is raw and un seasoned then take it home and blend it all together with a little spinach. You can then spead it out about 1/2 deep on wax paper and a cookie sheet and freeze it. After it freezes cut it up into cubes and the fish will go nuts!

You can make a lot more food that is healthier for the fish and less $$$$. You could also add a little garlic juice to it to help keep the fish parasite resistant.

For my Eel....I alway baught the 5$ package of liek 40-60 count shrimp at Walmart and would thaw two or three and he loved that.

The only thing I really got to eat the silver sides was my Trigger Fish, of course he would eat tar if you threw it in the tank.

I tried the Seafood Mix that has like squid, clams, shrimp, etc all mixed togther and he never would eat that but he would sure tear up those shimp. I think that maybe I spoiled him a little cause I would peel the shell for him.

I like the spinch idea with a little garlic and maybe some vitamins.

I feed mine Krill. I've used silversides for my anmeones, LT plate, and bubble corals in the past though.

When I had my eel, I would buy the frozen silversides. They were in the freezer with the rest of the frozen fish foods. Until he started eating like 7 or 8 at a feeding (every other day) then just bought whole squid from the store and kinda broke it in two. One day the tail section the next time the head with the tentacles. Was pretty cool would look like he was sucking down spaggetti.

I talked to Mark at CB Pets today and he said he has never had a problem getting silversides. They are not a really commonly used food like brine and mysids so they don't turn over as often as the others do. He said they do have that problem with mysids occasionally.
