I have a few patches of this stuff in my tanks. Seems to be fairly slow growing, in clumps ranging from about a dime to quarter sizes. Could be a coralin algae of some type?

Not the best picture ... can anyone identify it?

Sorry - the dark "branchy" stuff in the center of the pic.

Does it kind of look like burgendy velcro (fuzzy side)?

No, it is more "Branchy" than velcro, like a maze of little pipes? It is soft to the touch (not stoney), and small pieces are easily torn free.

I cannot see his picture well, but I have two totally different things that look like that. One is a tube like sponge that turns black upon exposure to light. It grows in tube-y tendrils.

The other is a very hard, scratchey macro algae that I hate and nothing will eat.

Mine feels course, but its not hard. It feels kinda like the fuzzy side of velcro.

That sounds like it, haven't noticed if it turns dark only in light ... never thought about it being a sponge??

Just a guess, but I'm thinking it could be Bryozoans or sponge. We'll wait for Larry to jump up.
