Yeppers, the location does affect not only whether some people will be able to attend due to having to travel, but it will also affect whether they will want to go in the first place. If the location doesn't provide for a suitable way for the speaker to give their presentation and a suitable way for the attendees to see and hear the presentation, some people may not want to go.

I am very interested in going, but if it means being crammed in someones house or in the aisle of a LFS, standing like sardines with 50 to 150 people, I will not go. While the subject matter may be very worthy, if it is not able to be presented in a decent/proper manner and environment it will have lost it's affectiveness.

This won't be the case as all of the LFSs are too small to house aprox. 100 people. I'm sure the BOD/TimM is working very hard to find us a nice comfortable place - a la lecture hall or the like - so everyone will be happy and have a place to sit without feeling crowded. PLEASE, let's support this wonderful event they are working so hard to bring to us!! ;)

Wendy

Just as a side note, as far as this event being in Austin...well, we get to drive to SA a lot for meetings. Think about it, Cap...the last three meetings have been in SA. It's only fair that we hold events/meetings here in Austin every once in awhile.

Wendy - First off, I am on the BOD. MAAST is a sponsor for this event and we have been and will continue to work with Tim and his company who is organizing it to make it successful. We want it to be a great experience for all those that attend. Second, I said nothing about having a problem with what city the event is to take place in. We have tried to alternate between S.A. and Austin with the meetings whenever possible to accomodate all of our club members. I simply want our club members to be able to enjoy the presentation in an appropriate and comfortable setting. With as many people as may attend this event, having it in someones living room or an LFS would not be acceptable. That is all I meant by my comments.

Thanks for everyones continued input and support, hopefully a new location will be found soon and we can all enjoy a great presentation! :-)

I will attend wherever it is held.

If it got moved to SA I would not go. All the meetings seem to be there lately.

 Flame on
Man what a bunch of babies. There are a few of us down here in Corpus and the meetings are very very rarely down here. We have to travel for every meeting we want to attend. Might have something to do with the lack of LFS; but we always have to travel to the meeting. Flame off

My wife and I will be there, no matter where the meeting winds up being held. It would be a shame to miss out on such a speaker just because I didn't feel like driving.

Sorry Cap- We must have misread the following quote:

the location does affect not only whether some people will be able to attend due to having to travel

I have to agree with Shark_Bait though, it would be ashamed to miss such an event over a little drive time. Or in Shark_Bait's case, alot of drive time.
We are in, even if we have to travel.

Personally, I wouldn't care if we were all crammed like sardines...I wouldn't like to be outside if it were cold or raining, but other than that I'm cool with whatever venue Tim finds - wherever that may be. My original retort was not intended to be a flame in any shape form or fashion, I just felt that Cap's post was totally uncalled for and rather purile...after all, this is the whole point of this poll - to find out how many people are coming so a suitable venue can be obtained. I was just trying to be upbeat about this upcoming event, especially since I know Tim is working hard to make it a pleasant experience for everyone.

captexas - I am fully aware that you are on the BOD - you, of all people should consider how you come across to people, and try to be a bit more positive in attitude about this whole thing. You may not have intended it that way, but it sure came across as puling to me. Sorry if I hurt your feelings in some way, but I will still contend that your response to me was in bad taste. I just want this to be a super great event. There are several people (including myself) that have been checking into places to try and help Tim put this together.

Right on Wendy, I had offered my house(livingroom) to Tim before the club decided to sponsor the event. Some BOD thought it was inappropriatte to offer this to the club without them. I would not care if I was crammed or not. I dont have to look at him to get the message. Cap I just tried to help.

Mute point now because the wife wont like it one bit on her B-day.

Good to here it is staying in Austin. If we had a head count this would be alot easier. I propose selling prepaid tickets to the event. A presale price & a day of price. This way it could maybe narrow it down a bit.

As always trying to help!

Great Idea RobertG,

"I propose selling prepaid tickets to the event. A presale price & a day of price. This way it could maybe narrow it down a bit. "
To take it a little further, club member pre-sale=discount, web member, day of or walk-in normal price.

Is this event BYOB? Or is it included in the price of the ticket? :-)

Wendy - sorry you interpretted my post in such a negative way, that wasn't the intent and I really don't see how it was "in bad taste". That is one problem with discussing things online, things can be misread at times. I try to be positve about things, sorry if I hurt your feelings for whatever reason.

RobertG - I'm not sure where you get you info, but none of the BOD had any issues with someone other than the club organizing the event. We are lucky that Tim has been gratious enough to get Borneman to speak to everyone. The club has been unable to do so in the past as we were not ready to charge everyone a lot of money to attend as his speaking fees, 3 nights hotel bill , and his required meal costs would be substantial. Also, it was nothing personal and your offer to use your home is appreciated. It was just thought not to be possible to host such an event with anywhere from 50 to 250 people in someones home.

As far as an entry fee goes, I believe in Tim's orginal post about the event, there is a $3/$5 fee to attend the presentation depending on your club membership. This is a way to help offset Bornemans fees and other costs. MAAST and I believe another sponsor is also contributing as well.

Overall, these kind of polls are never accurate. We tried to do them for previous events to get a decent head count to better plan things. Sometimes we had way less than posted and other times we had way more. The club spent a lot of money for food for our BBQ picnic this past summer based on estimates taken from such a poll. A lot of people were expected as it had been planned for some time and ended up being a beautiful day out, but there ended up being a very small turnout, lots of food went wasted. Of course we knew the FinAddict meeting would be very well attended, but I don't think anyone expected the huge crowd that showed up!

Again, sorry if anyone took my comments as being negative, they were not meant to be that way. Thanks for everyone's continued input and support, that's what makes this club and hobby so great! :-)

Here is what we are up against. It is hard to get an accurate head count like cap said. The cost for Eric Borneman will run us $400. I would like to draw in enough interest to pay for this with attendance, but Maast will kick in some and I will pay if need be. We will have this event unless Mr. Borneman backs out which I doubt. If 100 people show up at $4 each we are covered, but you can see what happens if more or less show.... We could pre-ticket for say $5 for members and $7 for non-members with no refund unless there is a no show on Borneman's part. I don't want a huge debate on this a simple yes or no would be perfect. What do you guys and gals think of pre paying?

Do we have anyone that can do flyers?????? Maybe we can drop some off at the LFS when we get a place lined up. The more people that can attend the better exposure our club will get and we may be able to donate some money to the club. This will also help the new people into saltwater have a better understanding of corals and in turn support our local fish stores as well as our club events!

Ram_Puppy
Mon, 24th Jan 2005, 09:32 PM
I have no problem pre-paying. I would be a small web page with mroe detailed information, about the event, maast, and eric and his conservation efforts... just put the URL on the flyer... (I don't have any good desktop publishng toos, otherwise I would offer, but I can do it in word if no one minds it being simple.

Pre-payment would be fine by me. Also, I don't have any way to print up flyers, but I would be happy to help distribute them to the LFSs....LMK

oh, printing would be an issue for me as well, but I figure It wouldn't cost to much to run down to the local kinkos/ups and print up some nice color ones, we don't have that many stores in SA or Austin... or I could have my wife print them at work, they just got a snazzy color laser and want any excuse they can to print something in color.
