I talked to Sam about the orders. Ram, great job in splitting up the posts. Everyone, put down what you want in this thread and Sam will give you a total for your portion with shipping. He will be sending the order in my name since I can see the air cargo terminal from my office. Everyone will receive a bag in the box with their name on it so we will not have to try and firgure out who gets what.

Jenn, it's not a problem, just got some PM's asking me to order for them, just trying to avoid confusion. Sorry if I sounded crabby, I haven't quite made it to bed yet! :) (I'm at 26 hours now! :) )
Since your close, I can definately drop stuff by! (gives me a chance to look at your tank!
Jenn
Fri, 21st Jan 2005, 11:20 AM
Heh, when I said "fairly close", I meant that you are closer than those NW SA guys. I live just outside New Braunfels, but you are still welcome to drop by and check out the tank anytime. And don't worry, I am not easily offended.
Here is my total order update:
~ 1/2 pound tang heaven or red whatever everyone else gets
~ 2 black brittle stars
~ My share of shipping
Whoever is doing the order, just let me know what the total is so I can Paypal Sam.
Thanks.

I am helping Sam organize the order... but this is the best place to post to make sure you get everything you're looking for added to the order. I would say PM me, but my box may get overloaded due to all the interest regarding the order, and I'd hate for someone to get left out! Anywho... feel free to post questions or comments regarding the order, here as well.

For those people who are ordering :
Is anyone interested in some nice 1 1/2" to 3" spiny sea urchins ?
There are some with a slight yellowish hew and some with a pinkish hew ....
I'm willing to ship 2 or 3 of them to whomever wants them.
What's the catch you ask ?
I havn't had a sea urchin survive the shipping process.
With all the improvements made in my shipping process, I would like to see how these ship now.
If they survive, I will put them up for sale.
Also, does anyone want to try out a type of scavening drupe snail ?
(check out the pic in the Zenreef retail thread)
Drupes are primarily preditory snails, feeding on clams and other snails.
These drupes however, are primarily scavengers. I believe they will behave very much like nassarious snails. They won't be usefull as sand sturers, but I bet they will be great at eating all you detritous. I find these guys in the algae flats in fairly large numbers. I bet they also eat Algaa as weill ... a true scavenger ....
willing to ship out 3 of 4 small bags of them to whom ever wants to try them out. These guys are free ... so don't blame me if my observations are incorrect and they end up eating your snails ;-) I truely believe this won't happen ... but hey ... I'm (was) an electrical engineer, not a marine biologist. (Actually, all I'm missing is a piece of paper (diploma). I make a far better marine biologist than an electrical engineer. but I digress ...
let me know if anyone is interested ...
aloha ....

Sam, I will try the other spiny sea urchin if it is reef compatable. Please let me know so I can be expecting him.
samiam_orami
Sun, 23rd Jan 2005, 08:47 AM
(1)the urchins should be reef compatable. Never heard of a coral eating urchin ;-)
(2) the picture of me holding the gracilaria is 1/2 lbs. I"d say a bit more than 4 sandwich bags
(3) a yellowish sea urchin for Ram Puppy and one for Jenn ...

Those drupe snails are a dime a dozen here on the jetties. They kill other snails and limpets for sure. Not worth anything as detritus eaters at all. They are carnivors, so if you have a dead fish or clam, may find them all over that. They don't eat algae, they kill algae eating snails. Too bad there are so many of them and they are so easy to catch. Anyone can go to the jetties and get thousands of them. Without snails to devour, they die. If boiled and cleaned, the shells are great for hermits to play with.

Just look for the small house with the subsidance problem in the back from all the saltwater and equipment sitting on the foundation. That would be Steve's house.

Don,
Words like "look" and "small?"
Should I have said something like envision and miniscule? It comes from all those vocabulary drills in high school getting ready for SATs. Yea, that's the ticket, blame my enlightened academic background.

Alright everyone....
The good news is the boxes are in trhe air........
The bad new is that they will not get here until 6:40 PM tomorrow.
That's is when the plane lands and then it has to go over to Air Cargo so they might not have it until an hour later or so. As soon as I get it I will run it straight to my house. Hopefully I will have it at my house before 8 PM. I will post more tomorrow when I know more. Sam is very sorry and there was nothing he could do about it. Thank you in advance for your understanding.

Sam, just wanted to let you know that my urchin seems to have handled the shipping just fine. It is really neat and the brittle stars are great as well. One of them is huge! Thanks Sam.

my urchin is awesome... I was uprighting a turbo snail today and knocked the piece of live rock he was on off... I held my breath for a second, but it rotated and he landed on the topside too. The urchin and pom pom are my favorites in the order.

sorry again for the late delivery folks ! ! !!
Improvements in my shipping process can still be made
but it looks like we're moving in the right direction ....
for those with DOAs, my apologies...
please let me know if you want a Paypal Refund or credit....
thank you everyone for helping me out ! ! !

Jenn, it's not so much him landing upside down, as the rock landing with him on the bottom side... would have probably cracked him open. :( but he is alive and kicking! :)
Sam, I am very happy, sad that the little crabs died, but this is a work in progress! Were gonna help you get your shipping method squared away! :)
I personally will take a credit, and will probably want to make another order in april or may.

Sam,
I didnt fair quite as well.
None of the Orange Hermits made it......They were already out of the shell when we opened the box....Although they made great food for the left handed as they are brutes and seemed to all have made it.
About 50% of the Nerites didnt make it..
And only about 5 total of the Turbos made it, which is a real shame cause you sent me some real good sizes. They again were in bad bad shape when we opened the box.
I will take credit and make another order as soon as anybody else wants to make another order.
I want to get an urchin or two, eveyone seems to love them.
I can take pics of all the dead soldiers if needed.
It weird, cause all the dead ones shells are bottoms up after the living crabs and existing ones I have eat all the meat.
Talk to you soon.
Mike

Sam, did you see any of these while snorkeling?
Heterocentrotus mammillatus - slate pencil urchin
Description: large, blunt, pencil-thick spined urchin; often bright red.
Size: up to 20 cm diameter .
Habitat: in holes on the reef.

I thought that my micro hermits were not in the order, but they were. It was the Nerite's I did not get.
Of the micro hermits, 2 were alive, the really small ones fared better than the larger ones.
Only 1 turbo was alive. All of them looked and smelled dead, acclimated them, still looked dead in the am, then came home from work and 1 was alive! Yeah!
I, too, would like to just jump in on the next order.
On a side note, my tangs are not really going for the ogo, but my seahorses LOVE to frolick in it! It is great!

Sam,
I had similar results like the others. I didn’t get my left-handed hermits because they were included in the Austin order. The following items didn’t make it:
• 10 micro hermits
• 12 nerites
• 9 turbos

Misti, your tangs really aren't going for it?
I took a small handfull up to CB pets this weekend and had mark put it in with two purple tangs he has in quarantine so I could see which one I wanted, in about 5 minutes, one of them went nuts over the stuff, then a MASSIVE Regal started ripping it apart.
The purple in the other tank was in with two sail fins, and they all seemed more skittish, I don't know if they hit the algae or not, because I wanted to see which fish went after it first, and then I said "That's the one I want".... sigh... can't wait until quarantine is over. :)
