Well, I have finally gotten a flame hawkfish.... they are the coolest...
Anyone else have some personal tips that help them?
Anything would be appreciated.

P.S. Eating good and like playing around on the macro plagued texas holey rock.

Most all hawkfish are jumpers - a covered tank is helpful. As you probably know any shrimp added after him will be viewed as lunch.

Ive had problems moving hawkfish. I lost one in a move from Ft Worth to Austin and then another when my main pump went out and I only had powerhead circulation. Both times the other inhabitants were fine. My theory is that O2 levels dropped in the tank and they cant handle it. Possibly something related to their smaller swim bladder???

dunno...

****, interesting, he sleeps, and sometimes chills on the top of the holey rock right by a powerhead aimed diag. up,
(inch and 1/2 below from the top of tank)
where it is making a nice current on the top of the water... guessing where the most oxygen is being created.... basically he does his "perching" at the upper area of the tank.

I was under the impression that so long as the shrimp were the first tank inhabitants (and obviously the added hawk isn't of a large size), you're hawk is much less likely to try to consume the shrimp. I wouldn't ADD any shrimp now that a hawk is in the tank, but I would add another one, so long as I could score it at a relatively small size. To support my theory, in my experience of keeping a longnose hawk 3.5-4", none of my crustaceans have been harmed or even gone after whatsoever [being 5 sexy shrimp, 2 anemone crabs, 1 saron shrimp, and 2 small pompom crabs]. Hope your experience is just as easy going :D

Small shrimp size, like a cleaner shrimp or 2?
-or-
are you talking about adding it for food of some sort?

I couldn't keep any shrimp what so ever!!! I had a coral banded in the tank before I got the hawkfish and the shrimp would never come out except late at night. Then two years later, I found what I thought was molt, but there was some meat in it, so I knew exactly who killed him!!! Feed your hawkfish guppies or ghost shrimp. Mine would perch on my hand and take the food directly from my fingers!

They will rip that cleaner shrimp to shreds as soon as it goes in the tank!!! I know, mine had many expensive snacks!!! Have fun with your hawk, they have great personalities.

Now *that* is how to get rid of a peppermint :D

I've resorted to improvised traps (beer mug on its side), but this one is much cannier than its brethren. At least it's apparently leaving the flower anemone alone.
