Look what I found. If Sam can't find some, here is some at a decent price. Not available yet, but it might be worthwhile to keep an eye on it.

http://www.liveplants.gulf-coast.net/macroalgae.htm

I found this other place in Florida that sells it also. Appears as if they have some now, but I'd still rather give Sam the business if he can hook up with the algae farmers. Sounds like he is going to be able to make it happen, so I'm just going to wait and see. Good thing to know that we have other options though. If the algae farmers are just getting $1.75 to $2.75 a pound for this stuff, Sam could deal with them, forgo having to find it himself out on the reefs (which he could get in trouble for...I don't want that to happen) and still be able to make himself some money. Even if he triples what he pays for it, the pricing for us would be *well* below the $70. bucks a pound that IPSF charges (shipped)! :o

That's what I'm saying. I did say I was willing to wait until Sam found a source.

I've only been able to get my hands on some once, and the Tangs ate it so fast, that it didn't have time to grow. From what I understand, it is a slow growing algae that does better by suplimenting iron and manganese. Also, strong lighting required.

I just talked to the guy at liveplants.gulf-coast.net
It is not the exact same stuff but a slightly different strand and the tangs he has eat it as quick as TH. I am all about giving Sam the business but if he can't get some then I am going to order from this guy. He has a license with the state of Flordia to grow it in the Gulf of Mexico. Anyway, it sounds like a good deal and each bag adds only 1 buck to shipping.

Steve,

Your just an online ordering machine. UPS would go broke without you.

Me either. I admit I didn't try real hard, but, some of it did get a couple hours of direct sunlight in a small tank I had set up. Still didn't grow much. The other macros in my refugium overgrew it very fast in there.

The stuff I got from LiveAquaria never grew in my fuge, but I'm not sure what the ideal growing conditions of it are. I have a feeling the stuff they sell is just clippings from the main plants to be used as food, not the actual plant that will grow in your tank/fuge. My tangs at the time wouldn't eat the stuff, just let it blow around the tank and then back into the drain line.

PS - does anyone know exactly what licenses/permits Sam has to be collecting wildlife in Hawaii and then selling it? I always thought Hawaii and Florida had the strictest regulations on collecting wildlife due to protecting the reefs.

No, I don't know but he did say that he checked his permit and it said he was allowed to collect 10 lb. of Gracillaria per day. It was in his thread when Gracillaria was brought up.

I see Gracillaria in Austin at Partners quite a bit, where I usually buy it.
If Sam can collect he could sell that stuff all day to tthem as it flies out their day when they get it.

I've seen what they have...it's not the Tang Heaven type Gracillaria that we are looking for.
It's red and stringy, but it's not the same stuff.

Hey wendy,
Interesting as I didn't know the TH was somewhat different. If it's even better then great cause my tangs go crazy over the stuff I get from Partners.

That's cool! Maybe I'll have to try some then. I was just afraid to buy something that they may not like.
