View Full Version : How often do y'all feed your anemones?

My flower anemone appears to be thriving, but it occurs to me that I'm not sure I'm feeding it enough. It's getting a small piece of thawed mysis a couple times a week. Is this enough, or should I feed more/more often? It hasn't moved from the spot where I placed it in the tank, so I feel confident that it likes the amount of light it's getting.

I've fed my rose 2-3 times a week and had it split once already; it seems like it's about to do so again.

Chris-
I've never had a flower anemone, but when I had my condi (which now resides in BA's tank) I was feeding it krill about 3 times a week plus whatever it could catch when I was feeding the fish. I feel it was probably getting enough food, as it grew *really* fast. I'd bet your anemone would just love some raw shrimp from HEB too...just make sure and cut it up in small enough chunks so it can stuff it in it's mouth. Clam meat would be a welcome treat also - I would imagine. The condi I had wasn't really picky - it even ate pellets. ;)

I feed my flower anemones, condy anemones, and curlycue anemones, some silversides 2 or 3 times a week, usually when I feed the snowflake.

I have a thing for anemones in case you didn't gather that from the post! haha

How often you feed depends on how much you want them to grow. I feed my BTAs a krill about twice a week. Once they get a little larger I'll probably slow down to once a week. I don't they really have to be fed. They'llpick enough small stuff in the water, especially if they are getting plenty of light.

I've had a green, white and pink flower anemone for years. I only occassionally target feed it but do make sure some plankton (larger shrimp), etc. blows into it when I'm feeding the fish. It hasn't moved since I got it and it gets plenty of light and water movement. The way the current blows, it sweeps food into the tentacles.

For the ultra RBTA, I fed it 2 to 3 times a week most of the time. It recently split from a 10 inch anemone into 3 and I am not feeding them at this time because I can't see the full development of a mouth yet. I presume they get small pieces of food from the water at this stage if they want it during fish feedings. But, I will probably resume feedings when they develop to that point. I feed a combination of "plankton" (smaller than krill, larger than mysis), brine, mysis, finely ground seafoods (not shell fish), sometimes with cyclopeze in the mix and occassionally formula one. I may try silver sides next time. I'm sure they will like that.

(not shell fish),

Larry - Is shell fish meat not good for them? Something I'll need to know for the future, as I am going to set up another tank so I can keep a RBTA with clowns. Also, would this be the most common anemone that false percs are attracted to (to host)?

Everything I've read indicates that BTAs aren't necessarily the commonest or most attractive anemones to clowns, so much as far and away the hardiest of all the clown-hosting species. Wilkerson references a study in which the overwhelming majority of the other known clownfish host species died inside of a year in the hobbyist's tank, whereas BTAs actually did pretty well. I'll be on the lookout for one of those once I get the 2nd halide for the other side of the tank.

Larry, do you plan to trade or sell any of the 3 "frags" from your BTA once they're fully healed & ready?

If the anemone is healty, the tentacles will be sticky. You can just place some food on the outside tentacles. It will stick, and then the anemone will draw it in towards its mouth. It is pretty cool.

Be careful not to use anything too big, especially at first.
