Well I'm about to get this new tank up and running and I want to get a little input on pump size for the main pump. I'll have a sump/refugium probably about 30" L and 16" w, not sure exactly how deep. It's a reef ready tank and it will be mostly SPS. I was thinking about using a Mag9. I want to have plenty of flow, but don't really know how that effects the refugium since it is in the sump. I'm building it myself but it should be pretty much like the Precision Marine refugium/sump on their website.

I had a very similar setup on my 90 reef. I had a mag18 on a SQWD and it worked great.

Wow, much bigger than I expected. Guess I better get something a little larger than a Mag 9

I actually started out w/ an hagen 802 as my return pump when I started years ago and that was a beast at the time! Then I went to a mag9 --> mag12 w/SQWD (burned out)-->mag18 w/SQWD. I expected but never saw any detrimental effects on the fuge but the tank sure loved the extra flow.

I am using a ViaAqua 4900 in my 75. I am very happy with it. It has almost twice the flow of the Rio 2500 I replaced it with for about the same price as the Rio.

I guess I'll be going with something in the 1200 gph range. I really hate having powerheads everywhere so hopefully this will be a good start for the flow in my tank
