We are looking to do this buy towards the end of the month. You can still get in but you need to do it this week!

http://www.reefgeek.com/products/categories/controllers_and_monitors/104637.html

For 11 units, Robert has worked the deal to get them for $76.35 each.

2 Ways to Pay

PayPal
Pay to tackerb@yahoo.com
For credit cards, Paypal fee is : 2.9% + $0.30

So that makes the units: $78.95
I think if you can add the money to your account first and then transfer it, then you don't get changed the fee.
If there is not a fee for your paypal transaction, I will refund the fee.

Well, to play devils'a advocate here....

The issue isn't how many people are registered, it is how many need a pH meter. The salt buy worked well, because *everyone* needs salt. But the only people who need a pH meter are people who don't already have one. Established reefers won't need one, and I would guess that the majority of people here are established.

But I hope I am wrong. I would like to get in on this deal.

I would say that if you are doing anything that will have an impact on your pH then this would be a good thing to have... but it is also good to monitor your temp if you are using halides so that is why I'm interested in it.

Things that might effect your pH would be dripping kalk, using a calcium reator, dosing additives, etc.

Not to sidetrack the group order, but all of you need to do some research on this product before buying it. While it is a neat gadget at a cheap price, it received a lot of negative feedback from people on ReefCentral. I believe it stemmed from it being fairly inaccurate and having a continued fluctuation in readings.

Captexas,

Thanks for bringing that up. That is a good point. :D

We know that is not going to be the best gadget, because of the price at $99.00 or $79.00.

To get the best instrument (gadget) in the market like the Aqua Controller or something like that, we would have to pay a lot more money close to $200 to $300 for one.

Even at this cheap price for this instrument, it has to be a lot better than checking your PH or Temperature manually all the time. (You may still want to do that once in a while to make sure)

I know of a dear friend of mine that has one in his tank no names (CD) of course, to protect the innocent and it has been working fine. ;)

(maybe he will post, something) :?:

I called him yesterday and ask him about his Ph/Temperature digital meter. I asked him, if he has had any problem since he bought it and he mentioned that it has been working fine for him. :-D

Remember that the meter works by reading the water conductivity. If you have a lot of instruments or gadgets in your tank, it may throw the Ph/Temp meter off somewhat. I can live with that because; I do not have that many instruments in my tank (yet).

That is what I think is happening, but I am not an expert on this subject. :?:

This instrument may not be for everyone out there, of course. But after seen CD’s working, every time I go over there and not hearing anything bad from Chris (CD) about it. :lol2:

Since I am not having hundreds of different probes in my tank. I am getting one regardless we do it thru the group buy or not.

If the probe turns out to start having problems, so be it. I only lost either $79.00 or $99.00

The Best way to find out if this instrument/probe is going to work for you, it is to try it out. ;)

I will call Reef Geeks and the manufacture of the product and ask them about these allegations.

I will keep you all posted.

Thanks,

RobertG

Maybe get the pinpoint units, I paid 79$ just by asking for a club discount when I got somethings for the club raffles.

I will email the guy at pinponit & see what he can do. If anyone wants to know.

It wont monitor temp, but great on ph.

Thanks Robert for offering to check for us. Let us know what you find out :D

Reef Geeks, has kind of the same thing. They sale a Ph meter only for $99.00.

When I call them later, I could ask, if we can get a break on that one too. ;)

Just trying to help, other people like me get a good deal on a PH/Temp or PH meter. :D

Yes, we've had one of these on our tank since we set it up (aprox. 7+ months ago), and have not had a single problem with it. It's really nice to have the temp and PH reading *right there* in nice bright digital numbers. Would we buy that brand again if we had to do it over again? Certainly!!! As long as you follow the instructions - to the letter - on the calibration of the unit, you shouldn't have any problems 8)

Wendy -
How often do you calibrate it and do you ever check its readings against other regular tests? Even with the PinPoint units, they require frequent calibrating and if you don't keep up with it, you may think your tank parameters are normal according to the probe, but actually it will be way off.

CD

I'll have to ask Chris about that, as he likes to do most of the testing. We have what is termed as a master test kit (made by Hagen) and a Seachem test kit for the calcium levels. Since we've only started dripping kalk at night over the last month, I'm sure he has tested at least once in that time frame (dosing kalk has raised our PH and helped greatly with the low swings we were getting at night), and the test results were the same as the meter. Since there doesn't seem to be any fluctuation between the test kit and the readings on the meter, we have not seen any reason to re-calibrate at this point. I'll get with Chris this evening though, and verify that.

Established reefers won't need one, and I would guess that the majority of people here are established.

I still test pH by taste and a little dead lichen, but then I'm an old-school kinda guy.

Gary

P.S. Phenolphtalein is that purple powder that we use in pH, calcium, and magnesium kits. It comes from a plant called a lichen. Its sorta like the ball moss that grows in trees. Interestingly enough, its also the stuff they put in Ex-Lax. Don't go getting any ideas.

OH, btw - I did ask Chris if he had tested recently, and he has. Same reading as the unit, with no difference between the test and unit.

I see my name has come up a couple times in this thread so I will give my opinion on the Reef Fanatic PH/ temp unit.
I have used this product without any problems.
There was one issue that I noticed on arrival though- UPS threw the package (literally) at my door and the probe wouldn't calibrate (coincidence? who knows for sure). I contacted Reefgeek about the problem who then reffered me to Bob at Reef Fanatic about a probe replacement.
Bob promptly sent me a new probe and requested that I return the old probe once the new one arrived.
Here is where it gets interesting though: the replacement probe was not identical to the original probe. The new probe was a smaller diameter and obviously had fluid internally (which I believe all probes do) however, the old probe didn't have any obvious fluid internally that I saw- certainly a lesser amount, if any. The probe I have may or may not be what is currently shipping with the new units.
There ARE many potential possibilities for problems with this product as well as the Pinpoint (which I have also owned).

Several things to remember:

-Always clean the probe tip 1-2 times a month with a soft toothbrush.
- Keep away from powerheads with the probe- any voltage leak from powerheads will alter the readings due to the probe tip picking up stray voltage.
-Always insure adequate space between this probe and any others you may have. They will interfere with each others readings.
I even had this problem with my old $700 Aqua Controller setup which stated in the manual that problems will occur if probes placed too closely.
- I have calibrated and compared 2x since I've had it- everything accurate to date. I don't have a test kit that reads in hundredths so I cannot tell exactly but 8.2 is 8.2 with a test kit and 8.3 is 8.3.

I have been very happy with this product. Also been real happy with the Reef Fanatic Wavemaker as well.
The difference between this unit (ph/temp) and the PH only is the accuracy= ph +/- .02 compared to +/-.01 . They had to cut a corner on accuracy to fit unit with temp function for the same price.

If there is a problem with these units, I would have to say the probe is suspect since I don't have the original probe.

I think I will go to R/C and check out the thread over there.
My opinion on MY UNIT (without original probe) is: money well spent.

Seachem test kit for the calcium levels.
Wendy

Wendy meant Salifert Calcium and Magnesium.
We do have a Seachem kit that was used on our old tank some time ago.
I have tested PH with the Hagen kit- not recommenned for reading PH since it is always purple, and have 2 other test kits that I check PH with- names escape me at the moment.

Chris

Oh, and to elaborate, one calibration on the PH/temp unit was the initial calibration. I suspect it may be time to recheck though since it has been a few months.

Goavs21 - I agree, I have an RF level controller and haven't had any problems but have seen some negative posts on RC. I just wanted to bring it to everyones attention to check it out, mostly so people don't buy one and think they never have to do any kind of tests again. I have a Pinpoint PH monitor, but don't use it as the probes always need cleaning, calibration, and replacement every so often, and it gives false readings when batteries start getting alittle low. Became more trouble than it was worth! lol

That is one nice thing about the RF over the Pinpoint is that there is no battery to go dead and it comes with the AC adapter.

FWIW: I read a ton of threads on RC about the RF unit... There are a few people over there that have had an issue (including one who made a big stink, in multiple places). And about 3X as many who have not had a problem.

In case anyone cares, I just checked PH readings between 2 different test kits and showed 8.4 on both kits. I have not calibrated this probe in 3-4 months- I do clean the tip monthly though.
I have added a picture of the meter and the reading which I have just taken for PH.
I have nothing to gain from this group buy but, IMO, I think that it is a good product for the price.

I did notice when I went to the ReefGeek site just now that the probe in the picture had a top that was white in color (as was the original probe)- my new probe is black. Again, this may or may not be an issue. I am still convinced that UPS damaged the first probe.

Anyway, here's a pic from moments ago.

I feel that it was worth $99 + shipping but I would have loved to score this for $75- that really is a good deal.

I found mine in the "pre-release" stage at ReefGeek when all other stores were taking pre-orders for customers.
This unit really comes in handy now that I have started dripping kalk and even saved me from a malfunctioning dual-stage Medusa controller on my chiller.
A 1/3hp chiller malfunction on a 75G display can be a bad thing very quickly. This meter actually allowed me to see the problem occuring as opposed to finding out the hard way.
You can't help but notice the readout in the same room and I was kinda lax in checking my temps with my old, tiny, unlit thermometer unless I was performing tank maintainence.

Ok to help out more, I have worked a price on 20 RF units.

The price would be 70$ each unit.

The shipping would be a flat 15$ for all the units.

So if my math is right 70.75$ out the door.

There would have to be a place to pick the units up. The shipment would go to one place. I am sure others that need them shipped to them could pay the direct shipping cost of like 6.95$

Trying to help out. Also this company supports Maast.

BEFORE USING: your new monitor, it's recommended to soak the probe in RO or distilled water overnight to remove any residue which might cause an inaccurate reading.

The instructions are missing a step. You have to hit the calibrate ( Step 6 ) again before doing the pH 4 calibration.

Here is a message from Joe at Reef Fanatic.

For those that are having problem with the probe they can mail it back
to us for replacement. There's no need to send the base unit back.

There is a new version of the probe. The old probe that you have is also a good probe. However, the manufacture that makes the probe just cannot follow our instruction on the quality control. The problem with the pH probe is due to poor QC and bad glue from the manufacture, not the quality of the component used.

I cannot stop people from saying what they want to say when they are
not happy. The only thing I can do is try to correct the problem as
quickly as humanly possible. It's not possible for me to correct this problem overnight.

Our mailing address is

Reef Fanatic
910 West 10th Street
Azusa, CA 91702

Thanks,

Joe
reef@reeffanatic.com

I am encouraged by Joe's willingness to correct the problem, and believe that all you need to do is return the probe if you are having problems. Shipping is only like $2.

Also, if you are not happy and want to part with your probe, let me know. There were several people who wanted to buy one. I can respond to them and see if they are interested.

I hope this helps,

Bryan

My probe has not read right yet, I would like to try to recalibrate it but only had the initial calibration fluids. If we want to exchange it for the updated probe do we send it back ourselves or do you have to send it back for us?

btacker
Mon, 28th Feb 2005, 11:23 PM
You just send it back. I would email Joe first. I of some others that have already sent theirs back. It should cost around $2.

Polkster13
Fri, 4th Mar 2005, 07:05 AM
I just sent both of mine back yesterday (had purchased two units). One of my temperture probes would read between 208 and 213 degrees F regardless of which base unit it was plugged into. The other temperature units was 4.5 degrees off. One of the pH probes would drop down to below 4 even after being calibrated. The other would have major swings in it, enough so that if it were correct, everything in my tank should be dead. However, my Purple Tang and all of my corals are doing great so I can't believe that it could be correct.

Anyway, have sent them back and will let ya'll know how the replacement units work.

Polkster13
Fri, 11th Mar 2005, 10:27 AM
Well, I received my replacement probes yesterday in the mail. Very fast turn-around! Popped in the temperture probes and verified them with my mercury therometer. They are both spot on. I will have to pick up some calibration fluids for the pH meters before I will be able to install them.

More to follow...

technomex
Fri, 11th Mar 2005, 10:37 AM
My probe was working well untill yesterday. All of a sudden, my ph was reading 9.6 and then 3.2. I tested with a spare ph meter and it read 8.2. Good thing I didn't make any adjustments. Needless to say, I'll be sending my probe in for replacement. You would figure they would send some calibration fluid to calibrate the new probe.

Polkster13
Fri, 11th Mar 2005, 11:09 AM
Well they don't. So I am going to have to get some before I can check out my new pH probes.

I was impressed with the quick turn-around but was disappointed that they didn't include the calibration fluid. I am guessing that it would cost Reef Fanatic extra, and the manufacturer didn't pony any up, so that is why they didn't send any.
