I'm using Oceanic and there are a couple of LFS using it as a loss leader to get folks in the store. $39 for a 200 gal. bucket is pretty hard to beat. I think there are a few members that were getting a good deal on salt from Petco.com.

What you may find is that the shipping cost for something as heavy as salt almost cancels the savings.

Yeah, but if we can get enough people to order, we may be able to piggyback on a LFS order and get a better deal. Presumably they have a big truck coming in once a week anyway.

I didn't know Oceanic made salt. That's weird. BUt $39 is a great price.

IMO Oceanic is the best salt going right now! High in everything you need ( calcium over 500), but you may need to add a little buffer to boost the ALK. I have been seeing awesome results from Oceanic, and dripping Kalk.

I have to agree with Tim,. I have been using Oceanic Sea Salt and everything on my tank is looking great.

I needed to know more about the Oceanic Sea Salt, so I called thier customer services and I got a spec sheet.

Here it is the inforamtion, If anyone it is intrested. It reads as Follow:

Note: The Technician himslef (not Oceanic) said that 0.29 it is equal to 1/2 cup

When 0.29 pounds of Oceanic Natrual Sea Salt are mixed in 1-gallon of Reverse Osmosis water it will yield a crystal clear solution with the following results:

Specific gravity 1.021 - 1.023

pH 8.0 to 8.2

Calcium 420 - 460 parts per million (Oceanic said the higher the gravity, the higher the calcium is going to be)

Magnesium 1250 - 1350 parts per million

Potassium 380 - 400 parts per million

Bromide 65 parts per million I did not know what Bromide is but I found this site http://www.aquacraft.net/s9905.html

Oceanic Natrual Sea Salt does not contain phosphates or nitrates

Extremely low moisture content (prevents clumpin or caking)

I hope this helps those folks that needed to know more.

Great info Carlos - Thanks!

Seems like lots of folks are using/switching to Oceanic - I wonder what the market share distribution looks like?

This Oceanic is the same company that makes tanks, right? The crossovers in this industry are weird. Why would I expect the tank company to know how to make salt?

On a related note, I bought an "Instant Ocean" salinity measurer (which makes a little more sense), but it doesn't work very well. You have to really bang it to get the bubbles off the swing arm.

Ditch the swing arm and get a conductivity probe or refractometer! I had two swing arm hydrometers from different mfgs - they read .005 different from each other :o ... and both were +/- .002 when compared to a LFS's hydrometer :o :o

For a low cost hydrometer, I would trust the floating/bulb type before a swing arm!

I know they suck. I used to have a pinpoint monitor, and it was great, although it was a pain to remeber the right unit conversion. I just haven't gotten around to replacing it.

Refractometers are supposed to be really accurate, but I am not sure how much of a pain they are to read. How long does it take? I kind of like the idea of just leaving my conductivity monitor in a bucket/tank and glancing at whenever I need to know the salinity.

Actually a floating hydrometer is the most accurate you can get. The only thing about them is that they need to be corrected for temp. That's easy enough to do, you just read the correction off a chart. I'm going to be getting one in the next couple of weeks. They are a lot cheaper than a refractometer and just as accurate.

If you are going to use one, don't try doing it in your tank. Get a 100 ml. graduated cylinder to use just for the hydrometer. As with anything else, make sure to rinde everything with RO afterwards. I have a $.99 spray bottle from Wal-Mart for RO that I use for this. Its also great for cleaning salt from bulbs and glass.

I just bought a bucket of Oceanic 200 gallon for 39 dollars at Gallery of Pets. But I don't know if she was running a special or just likes me. I am one of Cathy's favorite customers.

You could give her a call and ask.

I think that she just likes you more...hopefully though, it is a special.

Last time I asked about a 200gal bucket, she said she could order for me, and that was at about $45.

I think I may be stopping by there on the way home from work.

I think it may have been one of those "Pet Club" specials. You might want to call first and see if they have any buckets left.

SaltyJim,

I am with you. I think she just likes Him better. :-D :-D :-D

How come we here in Austin, don't start a group order for the Oceanic Sea Salt. I will take 2-200 buckets.

We could either do it thru LFS or we could ask Tim's to helps us buy the Oceanic Sea Salt as a group buy thru 360 reef farms

What do you all think about that? ;) ;) ;) ;)

Actually, Tim and I were discussing that exact thing yesterday. If ya'll would like to do this, how many can we count on?

It looks like everyone is mainly interested in Oceanic.

As far as the sand goes, that was done through two club members in Austin, they got like 4 pallets of it through a guy in Dallas that brought in a truckload. They had lots of sand, it just sold quickly at that price.

On the salt issue, I know the quantity ordered will affect the final price, but the last time Tim did a group order on it, I think it ended up going for the same amount as the sale prices at the LFS ($39/bucket for Oceanic). If the group order price is just going to be the same, it will be much less hastle just to pick it up at an LFS and support the local economy at the same time.

AlexKilpatrick

Tim is part of the local economy.. :)

I would gladly go to a local store, but I don't know of any that sell it for $39 (in Austin, anyway)

Thanks for pointing this out Alex. I'll check into the salt if one of the LFS does not want to do this.

LOL, I know Tim is, I was just meant if a group order was done buying the salt from some other distributor/online retailer and it wasn't a better deal than a local outfit.
