I got this skimmer from a friend. I cleaned it out and put it in my sump. I have been running if for a couple hours now and it is full of water from the foam. The whole to release the excess is about 1/2" from the bottom. This seems a little low. I have not looked at other skimmers but I would seem that the release whole should be closer to the top of the over flow container. Any thoughts?

If the skimmer product is watery then you are probably giving it to much air. Try using an air valve and cutting back on the air. It can take a while to tune it, sorta like adjusting a carbareutor. Lean it out.

It is a myreef skimmer that take air in at the top. It just has a hose hooked to it. Are you suggesting to put a regulator on it?

A skimmer will either use a venturi valve or an airstone to generate bubbles in the reaction camber. On a venturi model, there should be a value (usually a needle value) that regulates the amount of air that goes into the reaction chamber. If you turn it all the way to the closed position, then all of the bubbles in the reaction chamber will go away. Then slowly open the valve until you get the desired level of foam.

I understand what you are saying. When I cover the hole with my finger the foam disappears. I will probably go to hd to see if I can a regulator for this hole. thanks

When you say that "I cover the hole with my finger the foam disappears", where is this hole located?
Can you provide a picture?

It has submersible pump that pumps the water into the one container that sits on top of this black box. On that container is a whole that if I cover it up it would lower the bubbles. Then the water goes into the box and foam goes up another tower where the collection cup is. I would provide a pic but have not figured out how to put on this sight. :(

Just get a plastic air valve at the LFS like you use to regulate air going to an airstone on a FW tank. Use that to regulate the air going to the skimmer. You product should be black. If you are getting clear water then you need to cut back on the air. If you aren't getting any product, then you need to open it up.
