Well... what cracked ? Obviously the tank, but if you put another 100 in the same situation ...
What caused the crack? Is what Im getting at

Im wondering if the stand stressed causing it to crack. It sounds like you heard it and then it continued. The first pop was the break and the little ones after was the stress finishing it off. Yes?

Glad to hear that ... can you look from under and see anything? Was there any water at all outside the tank or was it just a panic move?

Could it have been stress on the stand? Alot like the popping and creaks you hear in a house when it settles?

I know the glass sound  !!
You wanted the facade for the existing stand and Im thinking if you are interested I can build you a stand today to match the hood and at what ever height. If funds are tight buy the materials and pay me later.

Alamo Aquatics on Bandera used to have those 5 ft 100 gallon tanks in stock.

I would just make a mad dash to all the LFS, including PetsMart & PetCo. But I bet Tex Tropical or AA has something in stock?
BTW - I think y'all need some training in effective water change methods :-D

As far as finding a new tank, try Alamo or Fintique on West Avenue. I know Fintique even had them on sale one year for Xmas.
I would definately check to make sure the tank is level before you put another tank on top of it. If it is not level, this will put extra stress on the tank. I wouln't expect the canopy to be responsible for it, it was probably just a matter of time before the glass was going to give due to whatever stress was being put on it.

So no water leaked from the tank? Do you have glass covers for the lights? Are they halides? Sometimes they will make a little noise when they are new and heating up for the first time.

Nah.The lights weren't on.
Pete awesome offer...and I really really want to take you up on it but we already bought a stand and tank...and I would still have to stain the stand. Brian has to work all day tomorrow so we really need to get it done today. :(

We found a 100 gallon at Alamo. No evidence of a leak in the old tank unitl I started cleaning it and then we found it alright!! While I was cleaning it (some friends of ours want it as a reptile habitat) I found the date of manufacture: Aug 1985!!!!! We are the third owners of this tank that we know of so who knows what its been through. Thanks everyone for your concern. :D
