I am pleased to announce that our apartment has officially been baptized. We (greenmako and C.Mydas) just experienced our first major saltwater spill (probably about 7 gallons). We had to borrow fans and towels from our neighbors and Brian is out buying a shop vac right now. I guess you know you're in the hobby for good when right as everything is going to *@#%$ you are laughing and running for the towels!...It had to happen some time.
By the way it was Brian's fault...
Tank: 01
Humans: 00
...and the game begins...

Ahhh the carpet needed to be cleaned anyway. What caused it?

Amateurs! Last week my wife and I cleaned up about 40-60 gallons from a "small" leak
Glad to hear you got it all cleaned up, and glad it was "Brian's Fault"!

Brian came home from his last final and wanted to do something relaxing...so he decided to do a water change on the 100g.
NEW RULE #1- Don't do anything 'strenuous' after a final.
From what I can gather he forgot to turn the chiller off and it continued to pump into the sump...so the sump overflowed.
NEW RULE #2- Make sure everything is turned off and Don't Do Anything 'Strenuous' After Finals!
When he went to grab the siphon hose (the one he was using to do the water change) and use it to drain some of the water out of the sump he realized that it had back siphoned all over the carpet.
NEW RULE #3- Leave both ends of the hose in the tank when unattended AND DON'T DO ANYTHING STRENUOUS AFTER FINALS!! :-D :-D :-D

I just noticed:
100g reef, 37g reef, 10g reef, 1 beagle, 1 cat, 1 lizard, 1 cockatiel, 1 fiance: all in a one bedroom apartment...PRICELESS.
I am in awe, at least in your ability to pay pet deposits! How much was the deposit on the Fiance ;)

When I saw this post I was beginning to think he dunked your head in the tank, saying a little blessing. I bet that wont happen again. LOL We live & learn. :D

Oh I'll be paying for that decision for years. :cry2: :-D
Our apartment complex doesn't charge for extra animals...they are great about letting us have whatever we want...but they kill us in the rent!

curious, where is the chiller pulling the water from?? I think mine will pull from the sump, then pump back into the sump.........

I would like to point out, that at this moment in time, a 30 or 40 gallon leak would entail 100% of my current reef tank plus, some special salt water that 'appears out of thin air'.
That being said.. I have put a 5 gallon bucket on the floor at 9AM, inserted RO water tube, walked away, come back at 10PM and realized my errors... the complex and my downstairs neighbors were NOT happy.

Steve,
Look on the bright side, the leak saved you from doing a water change. 40 gal. is just about right for your system isn't it?

Oh.................don'g get me started, it could be a WHOLE lot worse.
Just imagine if you will, about 100 gallons and about 530 square feet of damage to the tune of about $8000 worth of damange.
As if 100 gallons on the floor didn't drive me out of the hobby, I am in the process in brewing up about 450 gallons of saltwater!!!
You have to love addiction, its a powerfull thing.

Mike wins, he has the "Ulimate" rapid water change system! But it will get a little expensive after about the 3rd "water change"

I got a beautiful new stained concrete floor out of my spill. And a "what not to do" lesson in plumbing.

Yeah the 'spill' didn't deter us either...we are setting up a nano (1g) right now :-D :-D which will be tank #4...not including the so-called "temporary" tank Brian has set up pn the desk (10g) :x :-D
