Thinking about draining water changes and sink water outside.
I can get outside very easily and was wondering if Saltwater would kill grass and shrubbery.
Seems like you could kill two birds with one stone.
Please advise.

I manually do water changes and the buckets (5gal) are dumped on the bushes and I have never seen a bad effect.

Usually it is not advisable to dump saltwater on your grass, but if it is somewhat diluted it probably won't affect it too much. I've dumped a bit in part of my drive way that drains into the side yard and haven't killed any grass yet. I have dumped it on weeds though hoping it would kill them! lol

I used salt to kill the grass in the cracks of my side walk. Salt water will kill shrubs and grass unless it rains to dilute it and make it drain through the surface soil or you water it down. After a while, unless you are on the pop sand thats prevails around here, salt water will damage ornamental plantings and grass. It dehydrates the roots.

Mike,
I wouldn't do it. I pour mine down the toilet. You can't tie into the sewer line from your kitchen?

Salt water will not hurt your plants in the short term. What you run into is a build up in salt and other minerals in the soil over time. After enough time you will have poisoned your soil and nothing will grow.
If you keep it diluted you won't have any problems but it is not good practice in the long term.

I dump mine on the grass.
Are you also going to drain sink water to the same place? Did I understand that right? If so, I imagine the sink water will keep the salt from concentrating. I would be more worried about the soap than the salt. But at least the grass will be clean!

I used to run my laundry water into a St Augustine turf grass. It was the greenest yard on the block. It seems that the more biodegradable soaps we have today actually work quite well. I've been pouring my salt into the yard for years. Not even weeds grow in that spot today.

lol... I overareated about 80 gallons of salt water mix the other day, Richard advised me that I could tell when the carbonates were building up on the inside of the trashcan... I just dumped the whole shebang over the side of the balcony... let's see if the grass dies! :)

Look at what grows near the waters edge in the ocean......Not much....Salt will concentrate over time and kill, just like most are saying here. Dump it to the curb or down the drain....
Alamo, I'll have to try the skimate to the rose trick. The wife doesn't like it much when I run it down the kitchen sink...LOL......
