View Full Version : Eric Bornemen, MAAST, and 360 Reef Farm

Tim Marvin
Tue, 7th Dec 2004, 12:10 PM
MAAST and 360 Reef Farm are happy to announce, it is being finalized! With the joint sponsorship we have arranged a meeting with Eric Borneman! Eric Bornemen is scheduled to address our group on the 19th of February 2005 at the warehouse of 360 Reef Farm in Austin TX. This is going to be an awesome event and you will not want to miss it! We are planning to start at 2 P.M. and will charge $3 for members and $6 for non-members to help cover some of the cost of bringing this event to you! It is not very often that we get to hear from someone of this caliber, that is interested in saving world reefs and keeping a reef tank!
For those of you that do not know who Mr. Bornemen is, he is a marine biologist from the university in Houston. Mr. Borneman has many published books and articles, and is currently working on coral disease research projects through ReefSavers. ReefSavers has acquired over 1500 corals from a sea wall in Florida for studies, which is no small feat! Trying to get a permit to collect any corals from the U.S. is hard, let alone what they are accomplishing! Set your calendars now, and be ready to get enlightened! We may have another big name with us, Jim Norris out of South Carolina has expressed an interest in attending, LOL... It will be great to see and talk with Jim again in person if he does make it.

Mr. Borneman also co-authored 'A practical guide to corals for the reef aquarium". It is written so that anyone starting out can get a good idea and understand the corals needs and placement in the tank. It is a good book, and you can use it from the start to almost expert.

I have the practical guide in my library as well. The one I mentioned and linked is probably better for the advanced reefer that's looking for more than just basic info on a particular coral. The corals are only indexed by scientific name. I think of practical guide as more of a beginner or quick reference book. Its indexed by both scientific and common name.

Okay, so I was beginning to think someone was messing with me. You really should drop us a hint when you do this. I was starting to think I was losing my mind (no comments from the peanut gallery, please) or something. Glad to know I am still partially sane (you have to be a little insane to do what we do).

Hey, we get pledge pins for being members of MASST? I didn't get one, just a membership card. Where do I get my pin? :-o

(Now the forum mods are really going to come after you, saying "Look what you started, now!") I hope I don't get you into too much trouble.

I believe it should be between the planners and BOD to solve and hash out the situations of club business in private forum anyway. Why involve a bunch of commentaries to fix or iron out details? Like these new pledges, for example? Will they get in? Maybe it will be by... I can see it... this should be ending up in the Lounge soon.

Polkster13
Fri, 21st Jan 2005, 02:48 PM
I was just thinking the same thing myself (this being moved to the longe that is). And yes, I believe that Tim and company can hash this out and that the meeting will be a great success. I am really looking forward to it where ever it is held. The only reason I started this in the first place is several posts dissappeared without explanation and since others have complained about posts mysteriously dissappearing, I was just trying to figure out what had happened. Again, it would have been nice if someone had posted at the onset that the missing posts had been moved to a private thread.

Mystery solved, time to move back over to the longe and discuss important topics like "Animal House".

See you over there... 8)

Instar
Fri, 21st Jan 2005, 04:10 PM
Some of the other mysterious disappearances are due to the errors of one of the new members of the BOD with fat fingers, hitting all the wrong keys at the right time... or maybe it was the other way around? Anyway, those were mistakes and probably won't be made again. I think the site setup or user access was modified to prevent that from happening again. If not, it should be. Shouldn't be hard to do. All web servers need journaled backups when changes are made so they can be undone when not desirable.

Thanks

It's going to be in Austin for sure. Tim is probably going to have the exact location verified within the next few days, and I'm sure he will post it as soon as he knows. It is definitely going to be on the 19th of Feb., so everybody needs to make sure and get off work that day (heh...or play sick ;) ).

You can always pay at the meetings, or send to Misti via PayPal...OR send a check to her house...I know she posted her addy somewhere for that purpose - It's in the "questions" section towards the bottom of the forum list. Look for a post about dues.
