I woke up this morning to find my long tentacle anenome had moved into a maxijet power head. It doesn't look good. I removed the bottom siphon from the power head and the anenome fell to the bottom of the tank but it looks like he tore some of his base. I'm so sad...we've had him for about 4 months and has been thriving....i don't know why he decided to move

Should i remove him? I've heard that they could be toxic.
thanks,
Jeff

well, in anemone 101, the thing to do is cover all powerhead intakes, to prevent your anemone from being anemone chowder, it might had moved because it either needed more light, or simply because it wasnt happy there...sometimes they make it, sometimes they dont, depends on the damage..it can be toxic if its dead and you leave it in your tank, it will get polluted.

Well I'm no Anemone instructor. In my experience they move when they want to, nothing you can do there. Mine was sucked into a 6100 stream, it did fine. I removed the strainer with the anemone on it, Left came home later to a happy anemone. It did not damage the foot, I hope it all works out...

If it does not make it, you do want to get it out ASAP..

silverchair, i had the strainer over the bottom of the powerhead...is there something more that you suggest?

Thanks Robert...and thanks for introducing me to the site. I met you the night Kathy was unpacking all the corals at Gallery of Pets. All the corals i picked up that night are doing great too by the way!

Ok, so if he doesn't make it we have to remove it asap....what sings are there that he hasn't made it???

thanks,
Jeff

Cool Jeff, Glad you made it on. If you notice any tissue looking bad like melting away, Pull him out.

Hope everything works out, Welcome to Maast!

Jeff, you might want to invest in a sponge filter cover for your powerheads... I have done that with all of mine, better safe than sorry.

Thanks everyone....started brewing the water for a change just in case. the sponge filters are a good idea...plus added filtration wouldn't be a bad thing but sounds like yet more maintenance!! :)

There's gotta be a better way to plumb in circulation in a tank and a more attractive way than hanging up powerheads. Is there a DIY thread in here that discusses this?

Just cover the intakes regardless...better safe than sorry

keep in mind, that sponges work by increasing the surface area that water must travel through before getting into the pump, it may decrease the power of the powerhead slightly, but not a lot. I agree sponges are an absolute PITA, but, i would rather have that for now than a shredded rose anemone. Mine moves almost every time I do a water change, though, has been stable the last 2 weeks. I also disagree with the closed loop intakes being more dangerous, the bulkhead screens that I have seen seem to me like they would be very safe. ALso, when you get to the point of a closed loop, i think that there are probably more attractive options for flow in the tank for your anemone. Especially if you use a SCWD or OceansMotions type wave maker, I firmly believe it's not so much the rate of flow they like, but the highly active and random movement of water around them. Mine has taken up station to one side of my SCWD and seems to like it there, he get's pulsed every 30 seconds or so for 30 seconds, and hasn't gone anywhere NEAR the intakes for the filters and power heads.

I agree that the sponges are a pain in the neck. They have to be cleaned almost weekly. I have taken mine off and the anemones haven't moved yet. Keeping my fingers crossed.

JOshua, I am disagreeing that they are MORE dangerous, not that they aren't dangerous, While the mortality rate per incident is probably greater, i suspect the number of incedents is lower. of course, I have no hard data on that, so I am blowing proverbial smoke out the hind quarters...

when that happen to my green bubble, he was torn right down the moddle in half, i put half in one tank half in a 10 gallon refugium, they both made it, that was 2 months ago. NOW 2 days ago the main one did it again. he was split into another 2 pieces. He moved because a power head fell and was putting to much current on him. but before that he was in same place for 6 months
