I was really skeptical when I started reading on the subject. I have to say I was really surprised when I made some for my Max 1200's and they increased flow tremedously. You can reallly see the water moving. I've eliminated dead spots immediately.

VERY COOL!! Where did you get your design? Is there any method to the way you drilled holes at an angle like that? Or is it just restrict output from pump then add additional intakes after the restriction?

Ok, I just built and installed one of these things, I gotta tell ya, it really works great! It seems to have practicly doubled the output of a Maxi 1200. Took all of ten minutes to make and a whopping $1.75 price tag. If you wanna increase the ouput of your Maxis, I highly recommend this DIY project.... I give it a ***** five star rating....

Jim, did you use a drill press? I dont have one, but I wonder if it can be done without.

Nope, no drill press, did it by hand, as long as you pilot the holes its a piece of cake, I used a sharp awl to pilot and a quarter inch drill bit, six holes. Like a freekin water cannon!

Oh yeah, a vice makes the job much easier...

1/4" bit? Thats the bit you used?

I just went and measured it with a set of calipers, turns out its a 3/16" bit.... I also used a 1" ID pvc coupling instead of 3/4" so the barb fitting fit a little easier and knocked out the little lip on the inside of the coupling with a screwdriver then smoothed it with some sandpaper.

I tried something a little different this time. I increased the length of the Tube more (to create more vacuum suction) and only drilled two openings. It created a whole lot more concentrated suction and jet stream. Picture to follow. I gave one to Felipe at Fin-Addict and He says it's working great in his tank. He wants more. Hope this helps all - I love DIY projects.

Oh yeah, I cut the 3/4 PVC coupling back to 1/4 on both sides (to act as an attachment only (minimize weight)) Hope this makes sense.

Gary,
Do you think these would work on a closed loop?

Oh, that's a top and bottom surface skimmer. I don't have an overflow or sump, so I keep my top surface water clean by recirculating it. Don't know if it's a bright idea, but it works.
