I was wondering if I could get some advice. I have a Multitap 400w Metal halide ballast and 10k probe start metal halide bulb. It's all in piece at this point and I need to get it together. I have a 55g tank right now with only Live Rock, Sand Bed, and a few critters. The Tank has a wooden hood over it and I was wondering if I could attach the bulb and socket under it or not (with shielding) of course. Would it get too hot or could I DIY a fan to Cool it? Does the ballast have to be really close to the socket and bulb or can I keep it away from the tank in a cooler environment? Questions Questions Questions - I know Thanks Alex

They can be mounted in the canopy and yes to the fans as well. The ballast should be kept away and in a cooler spot. How does the canopy open for access to the tank?

The hood has two swing up doors in the front. The back of the hood is almost completely open.

You can just mount the lights on the inside top of the hood, drill 2 4" holes for the fans on either end with them blowing in and keep the ballast out of the hood.

That is not mine if you are referring to the one on the Stands and Canopies page.
