Does anyone have the Simplified Reefkeeping book? Is it worth the 40 bucks for it? Any Reviews?

I looked at "Saltwater Aquariums for Dummies" at Barnes and Noble the other day.

It actually looked pretty good.

Gary, the three awesome books I own are:

The Concientious Marine Aquarist (I am sure I mispelled a word in that title! :) )
Natural Reef Keeping (By Tullok)
And Reef Invertebrates by Anthony Calfo (I really love the last one.) it spends several chapters on fuges alone, and is probably the first well done 'modern' reef book in recent years (takes into account hte latest trends and so on.)

My favorites are

The Reef Aquarium Vol. 1 & 2 by Delbeek & Sprung

For Fish
Marine Fishes Pocket Expert Guide by Scott Michael - IMO every new hobbyist should own this one and take with them anytime they are going to by fish.

The Reef Fishes series also by Scott Michael. Great books for those who want more info than found in the Pocket expert guide. There are supposed to be 6 books in this series but I think the only three available at this time are:
"Reef Fishes"
"Basslets, Dottybacks & Hawkfishes"
"Angelfishes & Butterflyfishes"

I will second this recommendation - great books! Watch Amazon.com for a good price on these!

The best "first" book I ever saw is Shimek's "The Coral Reef Aquarium". It's a very small book, just 50-60 pgs, filled with exactly the information a newcomer needs, and NONE of the B.S. and complicated myth perpetuation that is so rampant in this hobby.

Having said that, I'm dying to get a look at Calfo's books. I still think it would be a GREAT idea for MAAST to get Calfo for a lecture.

I've only read one of Calfo's books and it was very readable. It helps that he throws a few funny anecdotes in to help keep the readers attention. Bornemann's book are the ultimate IMO for general purpose reference books on corals. I have 2 of them in my collection.

We should start a MAAST liberary, anytime someone needs a good book to read they come check one out. I tried finding books at the Austin liberary but they didnt have much of anything. They did have one from the early 60s.

Aquarium Sales & Service had an awesome library. They saved all the articles from the magazines and had them filed by topic in 3 ring binders. We have talked about doing something similar electronically here.

I used to go camp out there on a rainy Sat. afternoon every once in a while.
