I have around 5" of sand in my tank, so I didn't put any in my refugium. I figured that I had enough of a DSB in my tank.
Do I need sand in the bottom of my refugium?

Imo, it would provide more bacteria area. Not to mention a place for more sand dwelling detrivores. I think it would be a good thing.

Hey Brian!
I agree with ClamFan...even a 1-2" bed in the fuge will be very benifical. Any sand dwelling detrivores will get eaten quickly in your tank, but if flourishing in your fuge, you will have a constant supply of live food for your fish. Next time you come by (wish we would've known last nite), we can give you some 'fuge "mud" to mix in with the sand. Seems to help!
BTW, the orange zoos are *gorgeous* and look very happy in our tank...Thank you!!!

The refugium is a refuge for breeding micro life. A little micro-cosm of its own. To complete it you need all the parts and sand does provide part of the breeding and consumption area for such life. Its home to many species. Doesn't need to be deep, just functional. Some macros grow well in the sand too and there are many burrowing animals you can put in there besides worms.
