View Full Version : Fragging rics

I've got a couple ricordea that I need to frag, as they're just too big for the spot they occupy in my nano, and I'd really like to get their colors into our big living room tank. So, I have a couple questions before I cut:

1. Is it really as simple as just cutting across the polyp? I remember the earlier thread but I just want to double-check that this is really this simple.
2. Can the newly-cut frags be acclimated to another tank right away, or is it better to give them a few days to heal first?

Thanks,

Chris

I would let them heal up in the tank they came from. I have thought of doing this, let us know what happens. I have heard to flip them upsidedown & slice the cup off. Cut them into pieces equally, put them in very low flow area on the substrate.

I have tried it after the earlier thread and it worked fine. I would let them heal up before moving them or you could get get all the stress over at once.

if your brave, you can slice into 4's, but everytime I do this I usually lose one of the pieces.

Or just wait a week and slice again ....

so you can just cut down through the middle of one mouth?

From what I understand, the pieces do not need to have a mouth section at all. I was under the impression that you could cut the cap from the stalk, and then slice the cap into 4. Then you will have 5 new regenerating shrooms. This would lead me to believe that the mouth is not necessary for regeneration. Just as a anemone split will regenerate a mouth.

Anyone with more experience want to chime in? I'm basing this on threads that I found on RC on the shroom forum.

Looks like it's a mixed opinion on RC. Some have success some don't. After looking back, I think that I may have been basing my assumption on success with fragging regular shrooms. Perhaps it's just besto to do as others have and just slice down the middle. Then repeat as desired.

Sorry if I misled or mispoke.

Jim, I was thinking the same thing. Good to know the difference of experience. Let us know, please!

I'm definately going to try it with some plain ol' shrooms this weekend. I will try my way, and let you know how successful (or not) I am. Since they are kinda related, it may help.
