Why is Southdown so good?

::pete::
Tue, 26th Oct 2004, 10:03 PM
Its not as expensive as live sand. So most just use it for volume and seed it with live sand saving money for other things.

well im gonna go ahead and take 1 bag if possible, thanks for all who are working hard to put this together!

Southdown sand happens to have the proven best grain size for deep sand beds, and it's also a nice white color. It's usually sold to the hobbyist under reef sand type brand names for closer to $1/lb. and it's the exact same stuff from the exact same company. bagged in the same place even.

Does South Down make any black sand? Or is there any safe way to dye sand for reef tank use?

The only black sand I know of comes from Tahiti I think; Southdown is from the Caribbean... The Tahitian sand can be purchased from most pet stores. Your best price on it is usually found at Petsmart...
I would be very leery about dying sand..... Some people do dye corals though, usually so they can sell them to the unsuspecting customer...

Since I am in San Marcos can I just go grab a bag or is it a special MAAST thing?
My hubby caught the bug and we are picking up another tank Friday. :D

Off the topic a lil but when I drove down to your place Brett, that was the first time in years since I had driven in Austin, not to mention the first time I went to meet complete strangers. But it was well worth it, with everything that is popping up on my rocks I am not even sure I want anything else!

Back on the topic I will take 2 bags please, and thanks.

Sorry guys, I was busy last night keeping the small flood out of my back porch (almost 4" of rain in a short period where I live).

I am sending PMs to each person about payment.
You can pay ahead of time, or show up with cash, either way is fine by me. :)

Current count is:
Don-n-sa = 4
pacman =2
fiji2000 =9
oceancube =1
jenreadsalot =2
jeffco =5

total of 23 bags so far.
2 bags will not need to be hauled, so that is only 840 pounds. That shouldn't even break a sweat in any pickup. Plenty of room to spare ;)

I can still hold the six bags for you though (those would now be almost the last bags I have).
If anyone else is going to the meeting from around here, we can see if they will take the bags for you.

Thanks,

Btw, bag count is down to 2 bags not spoken for.
I also have one bags that the top pulled open when unloading it. It still has all the sand, it's just an open bag. $10 to anyone that wants to pick it up.

Does South Down make any black sand? Or is there any safe way to dye sand for reef tank use?

I've seen black, or at least very dark, silica based sand but never aragonitic sand. John Moffet used to use the black silica sand in a few of his coral farm tanks; it works fine. It won't contribute to diatoms, that's just a myth.

As far as dyeing, uh, nope! Unless you want the dyeing to inspire a lot of dying....

Tgray, I can get another order, but I will not be able to get the same price deal again. I might have to bump the price to $15 a bag to cover my costs. I would rather keep the price of the sand cheaper though, I don't want to make people pay too much for this.

I will be back in TX in January, we can get these bags out to everyone then.

no chance of it. they don't make it anymore. the only way u can find it is from a reefer that has some laying around.

good luck

GaryP
Mon, 27th Mar 2006, 01:26 PM
Its not that they don't make it anymore. Obviously there is no shortage of it in the LFS. Southdown got bought out by Yardright. Here is their website.

http://www.yardright.com/sand.htm

They won't sell it to you the yard sand if you let them know its for aquarium use. They protect their aquarium distributors that way. The old Southdown bags used to say "not suitable for aquarium use." Its the same thing, the only difference is the price and packaging. Who would pay $20 for a bag at an LFS when you can buy it for $5 at Home Depot. Unfortunately, not may Home Depots carry it, but they may order it for you. If it comes in on their truck you don't pay shipping. I think someone checked into this at a HD a couple of years ago.
