Ready to purchase a 240 gal tank and I wanted to do a closed loop system. Before I order the tank I need to figure out where to install the inlets and outlets, in particular the inlet. I was also looking at the oceans motions system. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Joshua,
Thanks for the reply, If you could do it different. Would you?

Joshua,
how about that inlet, would you do the same thing?

I have closed loop inlets on the sides on my new tanks, but my setup is somewhat unique that the sides butt up against an area where I can mount the pumps with little or no head pressure. The outlets are going up over the top of the tank. With inlets at each end, and outlets over the top, I can alternate pumps running at both ends for some limited "surge" from side to side in the tanks. As I am still in the "Setup" phase, don't know yet how I will like it in the long run?

I considered the Ocean Motions, but it just looked like something (rather expensive) that would eventually fail. I went for multiple inexpensive (Mag5/7) closed loop pumps instead.

have you heard of oceansmotions failing? everythign I have read and heard about them points to them being pretty sterner stuff... I have a HD 4way planned for my 115.

After seeing the OceansMotions running on others tanks I havent seen a part that can fail except the motor and that goes with anything ... really. They are built solid and I have yet to hear someone not like it.

The one thing I would strongly recommend is that the drain holes, going to the pump(s) are drilled high in the tank just below water level. And, I'd put the returns over the tank rather than drilling, and make sure there's a siphon break above water line in those. That way if there's ever a leak, pretty likely if you're using mag pumps, the entire tank won't drain. Don't worry about head pressure, there is none in a closed loop set up regardless of the pump location.

i have a close loop on my tank. two water in and two water out. the only thing i hate is on my water in i have screens on them so fish don't get suck in which is good but after time the screens clog with what ever and mine are really hard to reach. so next time i'm going to put them in a better spot. that way i can clean them

If you choose not to drill as Matt suggested (and I agree with) is to do something like this

Just an example of what you can do with a SCWD too.

Has anyone ever figured out a way to use a spreader bar in a closed loop so that it doesn't plug up? I'd like to put one in my next tank so that I get good flow from the back of the LR.
