Check out Sam's new site and let me know if you want anything. Items must be pre-paid before I will order. Items will be in San Antonio and must be picked up at my house on the day of delivery. Due to the nature of the items he carries, I will NOT store them. If I tried, they would crawl off into the rocks and be gone.

What is a Cowrie?
Tim Marvin
Thu, 14th Oct 2004, 10:49 PM
A cowrie is a cool snail with a hard polished looking shell. You see them in stores for sail, kinda oval shaped and very glossy. The snail covers the shell when it is out and alive. They are grazers and fine for reefs, at least the ones Sam shipped last time. The egg cowrie I beleive is a problem.

I sent Sam an email to find out if he has any cool little critters that happened to latch on to his toes while he was taking a nap on the beach :) Man, that sounds nice. The beach, not the critters on the toes.....
I am sure I will hear back from him in the next day or so and will let you know what I find out.

Wow, that was fast. Just got an email back from Sam. He is moving into a house this weekend, so his stock is a little low. Sounds like he will start collecting again in the next week or so. If you have any special requests, let me know and I will add them to the list and see what he can get.

I also saw some on eBay recently...one of the live coral sellers. Tried to find it for you, but I can't seem to locate the exact auctions I was looking for. They were pretty cheap, though. I'll keep looking for you and post the seller's name or auction number if I can locate them again :-)

Electric orange hermit crabs will be available.
Did anyone get any hermits on the last order ?
What do you think ?
I will generate a Maast price list which will be less than whats advertised on the webpage.
Let me know if you have any questions or if you want me look for something in particular....
Shipping will run about $60 max.
The cost for shipping can be broken up according to the size of what you order amoungst those who order.
If its easier for all; once everything is collected and ready for shipping. I can brake up the price for each individual order. You can pay me direct or pool the payment if someone wants to take responsability....
Thank you ! ! !

How big is it? I have a nice sized one in my 37 that I have had for a while now. Very cool crab and one of the reasons the 37 must stay around. I had one years ago but it was small and did not make it too long. That way I say I would like a big one. I am also on the market for a large porcelain crab and Hawaiian Strawberry Crab.

Tim Marvin
Wed, 10th Nov 2004, 08:01 PM
I have had good luck keeping them in the nastiest sand you can find. I have also heard you can use a clay type soil to put them in. Mine are a couple inches above water and I spray them down with clean unsalted water evry week or two to get the salt creep off of them. Nature washes them down with rain. I beleive the rate was 1 per 10 gallons last time I checked, but you know this hobby by now it is probably changed.

Sam, unless they are both tiny, I would like the larger of the two pom pom crabs. As far as tangs go, I am in the market for several tangs. I want to add all the tangs that I plan to get at one time. I have been waiting for saltwaterfish.com to have a plani tang before I order. I guess it just depends on what you get.

Have caught 3 more Pom Pom crabs....
Have a really cool looking 2 1/2 inch orange hermit (not the electric orange hermit crab) that has 2 flat small anemones on it. I'll try and take a picture. Still not online at the house. $12
Also found a 2 inch chiton. Think of a snail that grows in a straight line instead of a swirl. Great algea eater $6
Also found a small sea hare (about 3in) $12
---------------------------------
Still plenty of room in the box. Shipping is pretty much a constant ($60) up to 100lbs. To your and my advantage to encurage more people to order to split up your shipping cost . . .
Approx when would you like to recieve your order ? ....
I will continue collecting and posting any new and interesting finds.... as I find them ;-)

Well, Sam, by now you know that things did not go well. But, read on, there is also an upside to this.
I know you and know you care, so that ranks high with me.
You will need to get a copy of the DOT (Department of Transportation) Rules for shipping liquids and for shipping hazardous liquids and look it over. Its important to do this right to prevent unnecessary expenses to you, fines, and maybe more. If they had invoked their regs, this would have been quarenteened in Atlanta from what I understand, due to leakage.
Most of the stuff died/froze/suffocated during the long ride in the unheated belly of the aircraft. Thats right, there's no heat up there and its really cold. I've even had things arrive quite cold just going from Texas to Iowa in the middle of the summer.
Of the boxing crabs, I do have three, but, they fight during all that stress so most of the anemones are not to be found or died too? There are two tiny anemones that I can see and they have been passing them around during handling. Not sure what that was all about, but, it was cool to see. And I LOVE the size! Those are the tiniest boxing crabs I've ever seen, not that I have seen many and just exactly the size things I dream of getting. Usually get huge things, but, I love to watch these tiny creature grow up! They are perfect and even smaller would suit me fine. So, if they can somehow propagate those two tiny anemones, then that would also be cool. I can not provide replacements, thats for sure.
I also LOVE the size of the sally light foots and even though the water is really stinky after several water changes, (some of them died), but, the 3 I did get seem to be ok for the moment. Again, I like the tiny ones, so these are just great! They will be tons of fun to watch grow up providing the nasty water wasn't too much for them and I actually get them in the reef. I know these are really hard, but, I'm keeping my hopes high on these because they made it through all this so far.
Only a couple hermits made it for me to even pick up. Snails, who knows, I'll count the ones that move later. Nerites should be fine cause they are pretty resilient.
There are some things you could do to minimize shipping losses and costs if you are interested. Most people aren't, so there is no use to me wasting time typing if you're not interested. Just let me know and I'd be glad to help as much as I can.
I would like to try this again, bearing changes, of course. I'm really loving those boxers and sallys!

Thu, 2nd Dec 2004, 01:20 PM
my mangroves and nerites seem to have faired very well; but, they dont need to be shipped in water. double bagging would have been the best bet for the crabs and such. maybe they picked at the bag. you could try using non-clear bags so that the critters can not see each other. Some wholesalers put heating pads or ice in their boxes to insure proper temp. i have seen entire shipments come in dead, so some death is to be expected. although, these suggestions could help a little. good luck to all and thanks.

I thought Blake had already responded to you and Larry said it all
the packaging was shabby at best
and it would have been nice to have the names on the bag
Blake, theedprado, and myself stood in the cool going over wet leaking bags with dead critters in them.
Not the most fun.
All that said, I am happy with my stuff (except for getting all small mangroves) because I got first pick and my stuff was alive. Altough I have not had time to check on anything since putting them in the tank. And I will buy from you again, afterall, you are our samiam!

Thu, 2nd Dec 2004, 08:11 PM
It was colder than expected and a couple of extra heat packs would have probably done the trick as well as double bagging. I just got around to sending a PM to Sam, so sorry for him getting a little blindsided. Everything was a little chilly and that led to some losses in the order. I think with a little better packaging next time, it will come through just fine. Also not putting quite so much water in with the hermits and fewer to a bag would be good.
The quality of the stuff that made it was great and I was happy with the stuff that was alive. Thanks for the offer to re-imburse the losses, many retailers would not do that. Sam also put in some nice freebies. A couple of nice brittle stars as well as some Pacific Turbos.
Overall, a switch to American and less shipping time, a couple of extra heat packs and double bagging will fix it. The airline guy also said to use a wax -paper covered box for whatever that is worth. Keep at it, experience will work it all out.
