After only a few hours in the new tank my watchman goby, who I've had almost a year, ended up in one of my overflows and died.

Is this common and is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening again?

I'm glad the Durso's weren't installed yet, he might have stopped up the drain. I've seen the eggcrate in the end of the elbow to keep out debris, how many actually do this?

Thanks
Sarah

Sarah,

I am about 7 weeks into my new 110 tank with overflows and I have lost several fish like this.
Its crazy, if you get a good idea, please let me know,
I will be watching this posting for SURE.
I have put some fish in and never seen them again.

I have also lost two tangs who have gotten stuck to the overflows.
both of them lived for a few days, then eventually perished.

Good luck.

Mike

My thought on this is:
Unless the fish is seriously stressed out or dieing they shouldn't get stuck on an overflow. Some of my fish swim right in front of a tunze turbella....... Now snails and urchins can get stuck, but fish are usually strong enough to get free. I have had fish get stuck on intakes for powerheads because they got too close. As for the gobie, I have had them go through the pipe and end up in the sump, that is just bad luck, sorry to hear about that. You can screen around the intakes or along the bridge for an overflow box and this should help to keep them out.

Thanks Tim.

I bet it just got freaked out with the move from the old tank and jumped over the edge of the overflow.

They will definately do that. I just lost a hippo tang I had for five years. I had to move the tanks, and the next day he was gone... I am guessing it was because I had to take out all the rock and some of the sand from the DSB got stirred around. It was probably killed by bacteria. Oh well, everything is back on track now. It doesn't matter how good you are everyone losses a fish from time to time. It is just too bad you lose the fish you want and not the ones that are mean.

I call Damsels "Aquarium Trailer trash."

She snuck 2 into my SPS tank when I wasn't looking. Luckily, one of them died. The other one managed to kill my giant long tentacle plate that I have had for years by repeatedly burying it. So much for any future damsels in my tanks.
