I have never had a water softener before and the new house has one, so is it beneficial before the RO/DI ?

Never had a water softner - I'm from San Antone', I prefer to chew my water :grin:

I think I would try to connect the RODI prior to the water softner. If I understand how they work, a water softner removes Calcium and magnesium and replaces them with sodium. Doesn't sound like a "Good Thing" for a reef tank, or an RODI unit!

I don't think it will make a lot of difference. The RO membrane doesn't care if its a sodium or a calcium ion. The way an RO works is to prevent any ions from doing through the membrane and only allowing water molecules through. If the softener has a carbon unit that's a good thing. It will help protect the RO membrane from chlorine.

i do believe the PH is incredibly low after the softner. I have my Ro offf the garden hose (NO COMMENTS GARY).

Do not hook up your RODI before the softener. Having a softener will help Your RODI since it removes a lot of junk out of the water making Your RODI filters last a lot longer. I am not sure about the effect of softeners on the PH, but I don't think that anything a good buffer won't handle.

I have heard not to use softened water???? Don't know why, but I have not tried it myself.

If you have the option, you want to deliver the softened water to the DI resin. On commercial systems softeners are a mandatory pretreatment.
