I've got a bannerfish that looks like he has a bacterial infection. He's kind of red along the line that separates his fins from his body. I don't see any open sores yet.

This product, MelaFix, claims to be an antibacterial remedy that does not harm your biological filter. I know the conventional wisedom is not to put antibacterial treatments into rour reef tank because they will also kill your beneficial bacteria. This stuff has Melaleuca in it as an active ingrediant. What are your thoughts?

I have used Melafix with success. It is an all natural product - Melaleuca is Tea Tree Oil.

I would recommend treating your fish in a quarantine tank. However, you can add it directly to the reef tank. If you do, be sure to turn your skimmer off (the Tea Tree oil will make it foam). Also plan on a water change after the treatment has run its course.

HTH.
