Think it's a Gorilla of some sort. Large pincher, hairy legs and hiding!
I'll get a better pic if I can. Otherwise it'll come out in about 30 mins with a freshwater dip. That won't kill anything else on the rock will it?

well, is it stuck to the rock?...it seems to be a hermit of some sort...If it is, it wont harm anything IMO.

i've got a brittle star who would easily rob a glass of food...lol
but I will try. It's not a hermit. Claw is way too big.

I think it is a crotch crustacean. I saw a few of those back in my college days.

Killed him about 30 mins ago. Took boiling water to cook him in his hidey hole. Then a hammer to smash the portion of the rock open.
I don't get mad...I get even.
For ID purposes, he has one HUGE pincher and one tiny one.
Thanks to all who helped! I love you guys!

The first picture is of a hairy leg crab and the second has no hair on its legs. Some of those little rock crabs don't do anything but scavenge out junk and help keep the rock clean. Hard to tell from the picture about the big claw. Sometimes those turn into rock crabs that get huge. Takes some watching to see what they do. The big eating kinds of rock crabs have to go. I would watch the crabs for a while to see. Hairy ones that get into sps corals eat them, hairless ones are beneficial. The only sure thing here is the pic of the dead one is not the same as the pic of the live one.

he had to be the same one. I did get his legs as well, just didn't put them in the pic. In addition, while removing him peice by peice wih tweezers, his legs were removed.
If he was a good crab, now I feel bad. :(
If he was a bad crab, oh well. There are plenty more out there.
Hopefully now my snail shell graveyard will stop increasing.
