I was wondering if I should include the water volume of the fuge when figureing out the 15x-20x turn over an hour when picking out a pump.

Thanks,
Mike

correct me if i am wrong.....

water returning from the sump or fuge should be about 3x volume of the main display tank (the slower the better), this lets your skimmer ect.. to better process the water running thru it.

intank circulation is different, its this movement of this body of water that is most important when considering the type of corals you want to keep. hard corals like arcos do better with a tank that has a high volume of water movement, while soft corals like ricordias and colts for example with do better with low volume of water movement.

Well I was thinking of using a Pan World 30PX or 40PX to return water from my 10g fuge to my 10g main tank. Are you saying that I should get a smaller pump and ad power heads? Kinda hoping I wouldnt have to do that since its a nano. Dont want to take up too much space. A 10g fuge with 7g of water would only be 21gph. Thats a tiny pump.

Thanks for the help,
Mike

that is a massive pump for a 10 gallon i dont think your overflows can handle it, i have a 175 gal with a 70 pan world and my 2 overflows almost wont keep up

Isn't there a name for something like that? Maybe a nano whirlpool?

Im sorry I meant 10PX or 30PX. I was thinking of using the 30PX and cutting back on it with a ball valve. The 30PX is rated at 258gph and the 10 is 180gph. What pump would yall recommend then? The water will be going up about 3.5 feet and about 2-3 feet over. I have a SOS hang on overflow Im going to use. So yall think I should use a pump just strong enough to get the water back to the tank, and stick power heads in the tank. Right now I have a mini jet 606 @ 153gph in my tank.

Thanks,
Mike

I think the PW pump that does 250-300gph would be a perfect nano return pump. Unlisee you have a TINY overflow, you'll be fine. I used a maxijet 1200 on my old nano set up which sounds similar to yours, and it was fine until the pump got dirty and slowed down; I ended up cleaning it once a week. A new, clean maxijet is "rated" at 300 gph, maybe it was pushing 175 or so up from the refugium.

As long as you're getting a little twisted by having a nano externally plumbed, why don;t you try to drill a 10 gallon tank and put in a small calfo style overflow? I guarantee the hang on one will fail eventually, especially pushing a slow flow through it. I had mine drilled on the bottom and used a 3" by 3" corner oveflow with a tiny durso pipe jammed in there. The calfo one would be alot better, and if you have a couple of small return pipes you won't be pushing too much water around the tank. Putting powerheads in a 10 gallon is a bummer. Sounds like a neat set up; the pan world for flow, maybe a little mini-pendent, one of the 70 or 150W ones, for light.

In fact, if I set up another tank this year, which unfortunately is unlikely, I'd probably make a little acrylic nano and use the same pump you're talking about.

I would do the same as Matt suggested, with a SQWD added to return. This would give you an awesome surge effect in a 10g.

So should I resale the Hangon overflow and get a tank drilled?
I was planning on using a SCWD with the return, and having the outlets pointed at each other one flowing left to right and the other flowing right to left. Im just hoping it wont slosh around too much. I would have to go out and get a nano surf board :o :-D . If I were to go with a drilled tank instead of the hang on, where is a good place to get a tank drilled other then Beinswenger. I dont like the the pride they take in their work.

Funny thing is I havnt even plumbed this fuge to my tank and Im already thinking of adding 2 2g fuges before the 10g fuge. I am HOOKED bad. Im gonna have a monster nano. LOL

Thanks,
Mike

put in a small calfo style overflow?

Does anyone have any specifics, or a drawing of this style overflow. All I get with a search on any site is about Calfo's books.

I just need to visualize this.

Got any pics? I guess I should check your gallery before I ask...but I'm too lazy.
