Since I am starting from nothing, which is better, uncured live rock or cured?

you might be able to get uncured live rock cheaper but be ready to let it sit for a while in your tank before you add any fish plus some stench :)

best way to go is cured.... and let it sit with lights for about 2 weeks before adding some damsels....

Cured, theres no real benchmark or time frame for cycling, monitor all levels, when Am, Nitrate and Nitrite are zero'd out, add a clean-up crew, let it go for another month at least before adding any fish, and in my opinion, spare the Damsels unless you plan to keep them, they can be a real pain to remove later on and most are very aggresive towards other fish.
Enjoy and good luck.

IMO I disagree. I would use uncured. It is cheaper. It will take longer to cycle your tank but I believe it gives a great benefit to your sand bed and tank overall.

I realize that there is a time factor involved in starting and I am prepared for however long 2 weeks-6 months I just want to do it right.
My brother started with a damsel, it kills anything he puts in now, when he started a new job his tank got neglected for about a month and the water was BAD, it lived.

cured unless you want to cure it yourself outdoors. i ordered some live rock off the internet uncured and put it in my tank and the next day, you could smell it all over the house. it was so bad i had to take all of it out of the tank and set up a trash can outside to cure it in.
or you could get some that isn't quite as "dead" kind of like semi cured and it probably won't stink as bad!

so you got info from both sides :) keep your eye out for the for/sale section people always selling live rock... you get cured rock for uncured prices... problem solved :)

I'd do un-cured because you will get more life on it than rock someone else has already used and possibly depleted of pods, and ????? Plus you can get some really cool pieces for a lower price. How much are you looking for?

Three for cured and three for un-cured, hmmm, do I detect different methods dictated by personal preferance? I think so. It doesnt matter who agrees with who really, its all about making an intellegent decision based on proper research and what an individual expects to achieve from that decision. In most cases, one is no better or worse than the other. I just prefer cured because Im not a proponent of Mantis shrimp or the fragrance of rotting flesh... lol Hot Dang! Its Friday!!!
