I have been looking for a nice electronic ballast for my new system, and I found a model that made me wet my pants with excitement. (figuratively) :)

here is the link: http://www.vb1000.com/index.php

The VB400 Veri Ballast is networkable, you can hook it up to your PC, it has a burn hours timer, so you know how many active hours are on a lamp, runs ANY style of bulb, MH, HPS, MV, you name it, and runs between 175 watts and 1000 (If I remember right) Included software allows you to auto dim your bulbs, or even run them in overdrive if you want. It is highly energy efficient, supposed to run cool, and a bevy of other cool stuff I am sure.

Problem: It's still a beta product from what I can tell, no vendors out there, I signed up to be eligiable for the first release of these ballasts, but the minimum order is 5.

Assuming these things (no pricing available that I can tell yet) are not 500 bucks a piece, and that they are a reasonable price, would any of you be interested in these ballasts?

I have a friend who might be in for the model that controls 2 lamps at a time, I would prefer that as well. (vb400 = 1 lamp, vb 800 = 2 lamps.)

I haven't heard back from the company yet, but hopefully soon.

here is some info off their site.

Too high tech for my tastes around all that saltcreep. I'll just keep my little oldfasioned electronic ballasts.

Very tempting, but I bet they will cost an arm & two legs! Let us know if they release any pricing info?

well, they are going to be expensive. I got this letter from the company today.

Stephen, thanks for getting in touch. We are just about to send out our Vari-Ballast™ VB400 models and Lighting Control Software for beta-testing at a number of aquarium, hydroponics, and general lighting dealers. We expect to have regular production and sales going in a few months. This product is cutting-edge technology, and we're all on the edge of our seats waiting to get it out for people to use. Keep in touch with the website, www.vb1000.com, and you'll find out how to purchase them directly or from a local or online dealer. Our Vari-Ballast™ products are great to use and a great savings in peripherals, like timers, dimmers, and cooling devices. Within a pretty short time you will realize a significant net savings due to lower electricity consumption, higher lamp brightness and longer lamp life. We project that the VB400 will have a suggested retail price of US$625.

We'll be at MACNA in Boston in September. If you're there, please stop by our booth and say hello.

lol... remember, that is the Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price, it's always high. I am thinking I may get some nice cheap electronic ballasts and take a wait and see attitude on these, I bet the price falls like a rock.

however, remember that you don't have to buy a timer with this, it extends bulb life, and is supposed to be more energy efficient, so there may actually be an extended cost savings... hard to imagine there being THAT much of a savings however.

I'm for the energy efficiency thing myself. The seer upgrade and brand name when I installed my a/c was small compared to the overall cost and its saved me a bundle on a/c and heating costs so far. That unit took a direct lightning strike as it turns out, a few weeks ago and all its taken to repair it was a $15 dollar contactor switch. Generally, we get what we pay for. If this ballast is similar, then its worth it for me. Keep us posted as its possible that I will be in the market in the future if you want to buy together later on and see if we can get a discount that way. I really like the software dimming control for sunrise and sunset as well as bulb performance, etc.
