Hey guys,

I picked up some really nice purple live rock over the weekend, and im noticing that there is a blackish ash sort of stuff creeping up from the bottom to the top. Almost like the purple layer was tore off. Its a ashy center and a bright green rim with yellow and brown in the mix as well.
Have any ideas?

Try to post pics, but i gotta get the camera to work.

Sounds like normal die off. The live layer on the outside of the rock will die as the rock cycles. It will all grow back before you know it.

They call that liver. Stuff that dies during shipping. It sounds like it wasn't cured properly by whoever you got it from. Some LFS will sell LR as soon as it hits the door. I have heard of tanks crashing because of ammonia spikes resulting from newly introduced LR.

Check you ammonia and crank up your skimmer.
