Does anyone know of any good begginer fish that can be kept in a 30-50 gal. tank?

Small Tangs, damsels, fire fish. Just remember that you need to keep your stocking low in a small tank, especially if its a reef tank.

The fish I named are good for a reef tank. Your options open up if you are going to do a fish only tank. A dwarf lionfish would be cool.

If you've never kept marine fish before, try to go with tank bred and raised fish if possible. Many different types of clowns, basslet-type fish, gobies, a few angels, and occasionally cardinal fish are available. Try to get them at a vendor that keeps them tanked separtely from wild fish to minimize the possiblity of transferring parasitic pests.

If you really CAN'T resist wild fish, get Scott Michaels pocket guide, Marine Fishes, and pick fish that have a 5 rating. This will save you a lot of trouble, loss, and money, and help you gain experience. Then, if you wish to try some of the more demanding species down the road, you will be better prepared. I lost many fish my first year in this hobby because I didn't find out their requirements before purchasing. :(

Also, if you buy wild fish, I would highly recommend quarantining them at least 2 weeks (4-6 is optimal) in a separate tank to be sure you're not introducing some evil parasites to the tank. A ten gallon tank & top, and hob filter will run you 30 bucks, IMO a small investment if you're planning on many fish in the display tank.

and happy fish keeping.
