I am planning on using a hang on overflow when I get my sump/fuge set up. I was told that everytime I turn off the pump I will have to restart the overflow syphon again. I was thinking if I put a ball valve on the drain line and close it off at the sametime I shut the pump off it would keep the syphon. Im I right? Valve is closed so the water in the drain line wont drain out and suck in air. Then I can drain water out of the sump for water changes or what ever and turn the pump back on and open the valve back up.

Thanks,
Mike

The Overflow I was using did not have to be restarted. If Your overflow box's siphon has to be restarted every time the pump was off, You need to buy another overflow box. I see the flood already, after a power outage when You are not home and Your pump put the enitre contend of Your sump in Your tank without any way for the water to drain back into Your sump. Not to mention the new pump You are going to need after that because the Pump ran dry for some time.

Make sure you get the type that has the separation between where the overflow tubes set and the drains are on the back side and you won't have to wory about it. Hard to explain without seeing it.

I would think if you shut off the drain and continued to siphon that it would fill the box on the back until it overflow.......??????

Mike;

The whole point of an overflow box is to NOT have to restart the siphon when the system is shut off. Otherwise, as kaiser says, a power outage, even one for a minute, is a total disaster. Maybe you should get with Dan about a new box, or at least have him look at yours.

I carefully tested things both ways to make sure the maintank could handle all the water from my fuge and that the fuge could handle all the overflow from the maintank so to avoid a flood.

Dry fuge: Installed overflow at level I wanted to maintain the water. Started the siphon and let it drain into the fuge until it stopped. Marked the level in the fuge.

Filled the fuge to where I wanted it with the water from the first test still in the fuge, left the siphn off, and started the return pump until it was pretty much was not pushing water anymore to make sure the maintank could handle all the water from the fuge......

Might not have been the best thing from my pump, but it was only for a short minute or two and I can buy another pump but my knees would forever hurt if I every flooded the carpet with tank water! My wife would have pulled a baseball bat practice session on them! LOL

I dont have an overflow yet. I was just told the draw back to a hangon overflow was that you have to restart it everytime you turned the pump off. If thats not the case I have nothing to worry about.

Thanks

It really isn't that big of deal to restart it......but if the tank is empty, I would say have it drilled and installed an internal overflow.....I wish I had one.
