What the heck is Nori and where do I find it? What types of fish like to eat it? Also where is the squid found in HEB?

Nori is Seaweed, Asain Markets have. HEB might. All tangs and rabbit fish like it. HEB has the squid in the seafood section.

I cannot stand going to the grocery store. Is the seafood section where all the fresh fish is or is it in the frozen section? I have only been in HEB once in the last three years, so I am not sure where to look. Sorry, but I am an idiot when it comes to the grovery store.
Where is an asian market in San Antonio?

The seafood market in an HEB is usually before the regular Meet section. The newer ones have a frozen seafood section right next to them. The newer ones would have the seafood section on the right side of the store after the veggies.
Not sure on an asian market down there.

I've looked around the Heb's by my house and haven't seen any Nori. I need to soon as my Naso tang is a pig! lol

Central Market has decent fresh seafood. Whole Foods, too. Blake, once to HEB in 3 years? Man, you're living the dream! As far as nori goes, you can do the easy thing and get "seaweed selects" or something like that at a LFS. Same stuff. Or, just go to a sushi bar, get a few california rolls, take out the innards, feed the wrapper to your tangs... of course, that's the expensive route.

Central market should have nori as well. You can also try Nikki's Tokyo Inn/market at Hildebrand and Blanco. Also Tim's Oriental & Seafood Mkt 7015 Bandera Rd #523-1688 (its pretty close to Alamo aquatics). HTH

I have been using the Seaweed Selects from the LFS, but at $5 for a small package (4 to 8 small sheets), I spend more money on tang food than for my own food! Guess I'll have to do a tour of some of the other HEBs

You can get a 1 # pkg. of Nori at the Asian markets for about $10.
Aquatic Warehouse gets it from the asian markets and resells it. Basically its an algae that is dried and pressed into sheets. I think the big packages of Seafood Select are about $6 at Fintique. It comes in green, red, and brown varieties. Nori at the asian markets is usually a black color.
All of my fish, except for the copper band eats Nori. Its great for tangs and Foxfaces though. My Foxfaces will tear it off the clip and suck it in like sphagetti. They are pigs when there is Nori in the tank.

Blake, the HEB at I10 & De Zavala has NORI and SQUID . I buy my octopus at this HEB for my eel & shark.
If you have a pretty big HEB close to your house they may have the stuff. The squid will be found in the fish section where they have the "fresh" fish, and the NORI in the asian section.
Tangs go crazy over NORI and any other Herbivore will normally eat it.
I personally prefer to buy the SeaWeed selects that they sell at the store since they take longer time to dissolve and price is not too bad if you can buy the large pack (TexasTropical sells them).

The Seafood select is thicker and doesn't dissolve as fast. It never hangs around that long in my tank.
There are different thicknesses of Nori though. Thicker is better. I was given some from Aquatic Warehouse when they first opened that was almost see through.

LOL, I am the same way. I have not been to the mall in a long time. I guess I will suck it up and go to HEB today for the sake of my fish. Thanks for all the help.

wkopplin,
When you go to HEB, if you can't find the nori, don't ask for it by that name. You'll just confuse the employees. Tell them that you want the sushi wraps in the asian section. Most of the HEB's in SA should have it, although, it's kind of hit or miss here in Kerrville. a big package should cost you about three dollars or so. I cut mine into smaller pieces (1/8 sheet each) and put them in a ziploc bag with the dessicant pouch that comes with it. That way, it's very convenient to reach in, grab a piece and clip it on for the fish.
Good Luck!
