Hi All, I looked in the tank this morning! My Atlantic Surgeon Tang has one eye that is like sticking out. The fish looks to be in good health, I have not noticed anything different in the way the fish acts. Still very active, not cloudy! It is just popped out a bit.
Any ideas of what could be wrong, Also anything I can do?
My bet is he rubbed it on the rocks somehow.
Thanks for any help....I will post a picture as soon as I can get my cable from work...

Popeye - can be a variety of causes from parasites to just simple irritation. My hippo tang has gotten it once - a good size water change fixed it - have also heard of people adding some epsom salts to the water to reduce the swelling - not sure what it would do to your water chemistry.

Epsom Salt is Magnesium Sulfate. I use it as a DIY Magnesium supplement. It won't do anything to your chemistry other than boost your Mag concentration.

Everything that I have read (wetwebmedia) if it is just one eye 95 times out of 100 it is trauma and not infection. If it was infection it would be both eyes. They suggest Epsom Salt in a QT tank to reduce swelling......read alot about this in the last day or so cause my Flame Angel had this happen the night I added him to the tank. His has gotten a lot better in the last day or two and he is acting completely normal. I would bet that if it was just the one eye that it was trauma and not infection.....JMO :-D

Thanks for the replies, I would agree I think it was caused by some sort of truama. I have been watching him closely, he is fine in everyother since than the eye. I hope he is going to be OK, I got this fish from Sam, I would feel pretty bad if he is not in my tank. I dont want to think anything else except he will be alright.
Gary you use epson salt as a supplement for magnesium, thats cool. I'll think of that next time I test magnesium levels.
Thanks

Mike your big water change fixed the popeye? What or how did it cure up? I did a 50G water change. It seems to be doing better now. The swelling looks to have gone down. What should I expect in the curing process? I hope it is curing. It is still a little puffed out though.
What are anyones thoughts?
