I had an idea and wanted to run it by everyone to see what they thought.

I have an Emperor Bio Wheel Hang On Filter. I was using is mainly as a way to Carbon my tank real easy and add Oxy to the water. I am not depending on it to "Filter" the water. I clean it ALOT to keep the nitrates from building.

Here is my idea. MikeP told me that I should take the filter media out and put in some live rock. Great idea I agree.

Here is my idea.......I fuge uses Macro Algae to remove Nitrates, etc from the water and all you are essentially doing is pushing water over the Macro Algae, right? Would it be worth while to fill the Bio Wheel with Macro Algae instead to make kind of a Mini-hang on Fuge? Use the Green macro Algae that looks like a Brillo Pad, take the lid off it and put a small light over it.

What is everyone's thoughts on this idea? Do you think it would work? Do you think it would be worth while and beneficial?

how big of a tank is this going on???if it is tiny then it might help, but i'm not sure the little amount of macro would help, and you wouldn't be able to make many "layers' of macro, b/c the bottom wouldn't get light...i dunno, maybe someone else can chime in...

Ya, started thinking that too after I posted this.....it is on a 75 and it is a double bio wheel but I don't think it would be enough maro algae to really be beneficial......worth the thought I guess though!

i agree, if the tank is small enough. they sell similar sized little "fuge kits" at alamo for smaller tanks, so yeah it might work. hey, it's worth a try anyway, if it doesn't work you don't have anything to lose.

Except some Macro Algae.....LOL Think I might just get a 20 or 30 gallon and make a fuge/sump out of it......

Heck you can get a CPR Aquafuge for $85 or so, a large one, big enough for your tank. Not anywhere locally though ;)
