Hey All ....

It's come to my attention that some of my rocks and frags
may have been infested with aptasia ....

a few people have noticed some pop up on the frags they
purchased from me ....

I had aptasia occur in my 50gallon periodically.
I kept it under control by swirting any I could see with my siringe full of kalkwasser solution ... but I'm guessing there were a few in the back I couldn't reach thus the reoccurrence ...

If you do see any pop up ...
try and get them early before they spread ....

Sorry if this causes a problem to anyone .....

Hey all,

Just wanted to let you know I am had some aptasia pop up on a few frags, so far I have killed a couple by lancing with a dental pick and covering over with reef epoxy. there are three more little buggers I just noticed today, but I want to be clear hear, I have been working hellacious hours and not been taking care of my tanks like I should recently, I think aptasia can be controlled by controlling nutrients, not over feeding, target feeding, and keeping up with your water changes will keep new ones from coming up, or at least prospering, and the ones you do get, ther are a vast variety of ways to kill.

I don't so much consider sams frags the soruce of this problem so much as me being exhausted and having horrible husbandry skills these last few weeks. The frags I got from sam are absolutely awesome, and I wouldn't trade them away to avoid this problem, which I will nip in the bud for good this weekend by being a better reefkeeper (at the end of this 20 hours hift! :) ) I am doing some massive water changes this weekend, and will be annihilating the aptasia with the lance and cover method.

Aptasia is an opportunist, and it is a 'going to happen sooner or later' issue, nip it in the bud early and it won't really be an issue. No worries on my end. I am happy for the frags, this is just one of those thingsthat happens.

I think you should all give your Sam frags to me for observation just to be safe. :-D

I got a couple in the Crushed coral I got from you, but dont really mind it, as the tank it will go in is going to be fish only and kinda an experiment tank to.

Thanks for all the stuff

Thanks for the heads up along with some great frags at great prices. Doesn't sound like anything more than what is possible from buying from any LFS anyways. I was more concerned with giving your frags aptasia from my tank when I put them in. I've been using a small syringe and lemon juice to keep them at bay.

Sounds like a good excuse to buy a copper band to me. They are a bit of a pain, but I love mine. Or maybe one of Larry's Berghia nudibranchs, they are both aiptasia eating machines.

If you are thinking about buying a copper band, I would recommend talking to Larry (Instar) first. He is definitely our expert on the species. He can tell you more than you ever wanted to know about some of the problems associated with them.

I too am working to get rid of them, but the problem is the ones you dont see or cant reach. They just keep regenerating and then they are visible again. I cant get the nudi's locally and dont want to add shipping to their price for just a couple nudi's.
If I get a copperband to help will it get the aiptasia first or pick on what it wants? I ask because I dont want to lose anything except the aiptasia!
