Ok, here is the deal

I have been shopping around for a large tank (8x2x2) at various lfs and the general consensus is that with a tank of that size I should go with Oceanic.

well the price for a 240g from Oceanic is over $1300 alone so I checked the price on a 215g and it starts at $799 ( keep in mind that my wife has been with me during this ) well it is hard to justify paying an extra $500 for 25 more gallons.

anyway I stumbled on a company online that only sells direct ( no LFS! ) and the prices are amazing!!!

the company name is called GLASSCAGES.COM

I just got a quote for a 240g reef ready tank and stand and glass tops

$450 for tank
$400 for REAL OAK stand
$120 for 2 overflows that are glass? they sell arylic covers for $25
$50 for glass tops
and for only $120 upgrade to their version on STARFIRE ( low iron glass )
:o
and to have it shipped $335!!!

I have learned over the years that when something sounds to good to be true than it probably is so I need someone to tell me anything about this company...HELP!

I havent seen the tanks in person, but a few people here have them. They look sturdy enough so I guess it would come down to the warranty.
You could build an oak stand for less and wouldnt really need the glass tops.

Here is a 200gal (http://www.billsext.com/DSCN0484.jpg) that a local here is just starting and you can see the acrylic covers on the overflows.

FWIW the acrylic tank prices are less than the retail price of the needed amount of high quality cast acrylic, which raises a question or two.

FYI - I just ordered two Oceanic tanks (215 and 140). I started with an "Off the shelf" Reef Ready version, but changed to Oceanic "Bricks" after giving it some thought. The 215 Brick (3/4" glass with NO center brace) with Mega Overflows (placed to my specification) and holes drilled for closed loops will cost $1399, and there are no additional shipping charges, but I do get to pay tax since they are distributing through a LFS. Note: I am not getting glass tops, which would have cost extra.

Originally, the 215g Reef Ready "Off the shelf" tank would have been $999, and that also included shipping, but not tax. 215g is the largest "Of the shelf" sold by Oceanic, and the 240g would be considered "custom" which gets you into the $1200+ range.

Oceanic is definately "Pricey", but their quality is an industry standard, and I expect they wll stand behind their warranty, which I hope I never need to find out!

... And today Oceanic called me to make sure they were interpreting my drawings correctly before they got started :D

Hey don,
if you look at reefcentral under the vender experience forum they have feedback for this tank builder. I have heard that their tanks are built pretty well, but he does sloppy work. Remember this is just what I have read. If you do go with them, I would recommend the starfire glass, at least on the front 3 sides.

Yes, it is ... kinda like picking out a new car and then throwing in a few extras to get it "just right". I wanted the overflows relocated and a few holes drilled and it quickly became a "Custom Tank". Everything asociated with this hobby is frigging expensive!

So, how do you like your Brick?

The reason the 240's are so high is that Oceanic no longer has it as an in stock item. They are built to order now instead and of course now cost more unfortunately. I talked with a couple LFS and none of them understood why Oceanic did this. Really sucks as the 240 has really nice dimensions.

I have yet to see an Oceanic brick style tank, but have heard they are really nice. If you are going to use it as a reef tank, the brick is the way to go as it eliminates the large center bracing that tends to be a pain when it comes to effective lighting over the center of the tank.

the 215 is sweet, very sweet. get larger returns, that is the only thing i would do different. now i have to get a bigger magnet to stick through 3/4" glass.

Did you get the MegaFlow returns or standard Oceanic square style?

And let's see a picture of that live rock curing!
