I ordered one of these. $790 shipped for a 1hp chiller. I checked with a guy on RC who bought one and he loves them. Says that they are way overpowered and chill like crazy, but only run about 6 amps. Not bad. Keeps his 300 gallon tank pegged at 79 all the time and does not run very often and when it does, it is for 15 minutes or so.

I will update when I receive it. I think the guy also has 1/2 and 3/4 hp chillers. He is from China and worked as an aquatic refrigeration specialist, whatever that is exactly, I do not know, but he can apparently build chillers.

One disclaimer: I have tested the Oceansmotions and this chiller. The next new product that comes out, someone else has to try it out. And, no, the 1" SCWD does NOT count. :D

ps The Oceansmotions is awesome. Works like a charm.

WOW :o Now that's a chiller! You can probably keep a few cold ones chilled too!

I assume this monster goes outside. What are the physical dimensions of this beast?

I just can bring myself to pay the bucks for the OMs yet! My plans are for two closed loops per tank (three tanks), rather than a single monster pump per tank - buying a 4-way OMs for each closed loop is a bit pricey! If their price was a little more reasonable (~$100/unit) I would be considering this route.

... and I think testing the new SCWD should count!

LOL, yeah, it could certainly do that. You could keep an arctic nano.

There is a guy on RC who did put it outside. Look up MargaritaMan and chiller in a search and you will see the post. Pretty cool.

1 HP sounds like overkill, you don't want to over rate your chiller by too much otherwise it will be cycling on and off too often.

How many gallons of water are you moving? I wouldn't recomend 1 HP unless you had > 900 gallons of water at 90 degrees, otherwise it seems like overkill.

Just my 2 cents.

I dont think you can have overkill. He got a good chiller that draws less amps than my 1/3 hp and it should do a better job. His electricity will be cheaper, the unit wont have to stay on as long only probally short bursts like a refrigerator. and the biggest thing is kopplin is a crazed man with his system,(in a good way) he has a tons of sumps and refugiums i got to see it first hand and i was blown away, glad to see that someone is crazieer than i am.

Jeez, imagine a 700gal growout tank in the backyard, SP geting natural sunlight. It can pull 700 gals down 30 degrees!!!!!!

6 Amps for a 1 Ton unit, I wonder how they are able to do this. Even if it's on 220 most 220 units at 1/2 ton pull alot more then 6 Amps. This sounds like a really good unit. I'd like to put a clamp on this puppy to see the amperage.

From looking at the Ebay listing, 1hp is the smallest they make all the way up to 3hp. The guy is looking for someone to market them here in the U.S. as well. Looks like someone simply took a commercial refridgeration unit (like a walk in cooler) and set it up to pump water through it. Pretty good price if it works well. That would definately work on a small outdoor pond, but would hate to pay the electical bill for it. Mines bad enough with my tank inside the house!

my chiller is rated for a 500 gallon system and it is having a hard time keeping up around 5pm the temp is at 82. Should i get another chiller to put with this one or upgrade to a bigger chiller and run only one, i was wanting to run 2 chillers incase one went down i would still have another one running. I dont have any idea how hot my tank would get without the chiller, i am afraid to know.

I got the chiller. Had a few minor problems at first, but they walked me through the problems and we got them all fixed. Main problem was the power supply, it came with a 110V endcap, but was designed to be wired on 220V. Other problem had to do with a safety switch the shut down the chiller when the pressure in the cooling system got too high. That was an easy fix and they were really easy to work with. The control unit was set too low by mistake and I was able to fix it myself.

Now to the real info. My tank started today at 11:00 AM at 88 degrees. I got the thing started at 11:00. By 3:30 this afternoon, the tank was at 80. By 4:30, the tank was holding steady at 79. My system is roughly 550 gallons. This thing is a beast. Cooled 550 gallons of water (under full metal halides) 9 degrees in 4 1/2 hours. They have one for sale on eBay right now. This thing could easily cool an outdoor pond. It might cool Canyon Lake!

My electrician checked the load, it pulls 15 amps when it fires up and then settles down to about 7.8 amps once it is going. I think that is what he said. Any rate, a very nice chiller and priced very well, but I suspect they will be raising their prices.

I think if you put in a bid at the minimum, you would have a good chance of getting it. That is a very good deal.

Mine runs in the garage about 10 minutes an hour to keep the temp at 79.

Only been running for 4 days, but the temp has not moved off 79.

Hey Blake,
You don't have enough water volume now. I think you should put a raceway tank in your garage. I know how much you enjoy plumbing projects. :D

LOL Richard. That is all I need... It would put me in competition with you. I would have to put it to some sort of commercial use. I have enough headaches just getting my system to stabilize, I do not need to add another 800 gallons.

Somebody did buy it for $680, what a steal.
