Yea. GaryP has 2 nice clams on the sandbed under 2 250's. They looked great. I am haveving good luck so far with my gold teardrop maxima under 5 140w vho's right now. We'll see if I need to move him up in the tank later or not. "Fingers crossed"

www.clamsdirect.com is a great place to buy nd discuss clams!

I have 2 250W MH 10K's on my 125. I've had my 4 croceas, 2 maximas, 2 squamosas for just under a year. They are all doing fine and putting on a nice thick shell sitting on my sand bed. I feed DT's phyto three times a week.

1 250 W MH will be fine as long as you dose phyto...

Ohh.... you shouldn't have a problem keeping 3"+ clams under 400W MH... Just be careful not to burn them . Clams are senseitive to light changes. It's best to place them in the shade at first, them slowly move them into the light. I learned this the hard way with a beautiful maxima. (RIP clamy!)
If the clams are under than 2-3" they don't need much light just a lot of phyto.

This is a great book on them.

I feed Phyto. I am spot feeding it right now because of the light change. And when I had the 400's running they did burn easily if they were too high in the tank. I had to live and learn and then put them all on the bottom. Even the Crocea burned. But he came back fine.

Read the book BigReefer posted!

I keep Maximas and Derasas under 2 150Watt MH and they do fine. I've raised 2 1" gold maximas with good results. I feed mine Bio Plankton in the tank and direct about once a week.
