I've bought them frozen or in the sea food sections but have never seen them live around before.

Central Market has them from time to time. I've even seen them at HEB alive.

when you buy them at the market in ice they ARE alive. keeping them cold puts them into a sort of stasis that allows them to be shipped. it slows their metabolism(kinda like a coma).

I keep brine shrimp alive that way in the fridge, works for about a week.
By the way, just curious what you feed live muscles to? \
I've fed the fresh from market ones before to me and my fish.

larry gave me a great tip to feed fresh mussels to my cbb when i first got him. this helped to ween him over to frozen foods rather easily and also i gained a lot of trust from him quickly this way also.

btw when i had them, bristleworms went nuts over mussels cuz it was something big that they could all gather to without worry of it getting eaten up first. but now i have none due to the cbb and i have a bunch of hermits that go after it first also.

When you feed live mussles do you just toss them in or break them open?

larry told me to open them and fillet them inside the shell and then lay the shell and all flat on the sand bed like a dinner tray. worked like a charm!

I get them at the HEB at Wurzbach and I-10. I started feeding them for my CBB (per Larry's input as well) but all my fish feed on them now.
The important thing to remember is that when the shell opens they are dead and need to go into the freezer ASAP to prevent spoiling.
