Can anyone tell me what this is? I've been all over the internet and still haven't found anything to match it. It's about a nickle in size, burgandy in color, firm, and stationary. I'm sure that you are all tired of ID threads but, I just can't find it anywhere :x .

Nope, can't see it from here. I get the generic "broken picture" icon from IE and that's all.

Some people refer to this as red Valonia, its seems to be more common in newer systems and is fairly easily managed by physical removal, syphoning it out during water changes and chemistry, ie: zero nitrates. hth

maybe botrocladiaI think - fairly benign and sometimes even sold as ornamental algae affixed to pieces of liverock.

I'd wait to see if it spreads or starts growing rapidly before doing anything to it. It looks nice.

Red grape caulerpa? Your lucky to have what ever it is. Don't worry about it taking over, worry more about it surviving.....Cool stuff.

Im not sure but I think that is some base rock that came from me. I dont know the species name either but its never been a nuscience and grows in small patches on random rocks. Ive had the type before that grows in long clusters but this type seems to stay near the rocks. Tangs LOVE it!

Well it looks like it might not be a good thing afterall. I've had an algae bloom this week and it looks like there are more cropping up, all on the same rock. I could be wrong, they are so tiny, but Im thinking the water quality through this algae bloom is encouraging it to grow. Am, trItes, and trAtes are all 0, but you can't tell it by looking at the tank. Going to do a 2 gallon water change today and and continue every other day. Does this sound like a good plan or it is overkill?

Over kill. Do %20-%30 a month. It will cycle through.

jennie,

that stuff is red grape caulerpa, very beneficial to your system, try to cultivate it as best as possible because it is uncommon in the trade. most people get green algaes and very few "good looking" reds and brown algaes come along.

if you dont have any probs with your water quality i would take tim's advice and do a 20-30 percent water change once per month. switching out new water so quickly is very stressful to your system and may be more trouble than help.

ps if this stuff grows id love to have some if you are able to cultivate it :)
