I jsut wanted to check and see if anybody has had any problems switching to Oceanic Salt. I'm using AquaCraft salt right now but nobody carries it locally, and if Oceanic works well I'll probably just go that route. I'd be switching over slowly. Has anybody expereicne anything I should know about before I buy a bucket? Thanks guys.

By aquacraft, you mean the marine environment salt, right? CB pets has a bunch of it. I'd probably wait on the oceanic if you're using marine environment; that was one of two salts that did well in Shimek's salt test, in both the chemical analysis and the urchin larvae survival test. Oceanic was not available during that test. Maybe you could search to see if anyone has independently tested oceanic salt for metal concentrations.

I switched to Oceanic and it did the Tank good. I don't test for everything, but looking at the tank after a few weeks and everything seemed to have improved.

Well then I'm on my way out to CB Pets. Thanks Matt.

I set up my new Jim Norris frag tank useing it and the only problem I have is I dose a couple gallons of kalk solution per day and the calcium is in the 500's and PH is 8.4. This is a tad higher than I would like to see these two readings, but I'm sure when I load a few hundred more frags into that tank it will help.

I switched from IO and had no problems. Why do you want to get away from the Aquacraft? I thought it was supposed to be the best stuff around if you can afford it.

Did you switch the IO to Oceanic slowly or all at once? I was wondering this because I currently us IO but dont want to start the tank fresh again. And does it seem to be better than the IO?

I have a 75g tank with about 50gallons of water in my sump/fuge. I did a 40g water change first and then next time I did about 30g. Haven't had any problems. It mixes much better and stays in solution where IO always left residue on everything.

hmmm... point of consideration. I never thought of this before... but I started my 30 with instant ocean, and almost immediately went to Oceanic, which I am happy with. But I am sure for the first month or so there was a IO/Oceanic solution going on in there, and that IS when I had my crab fatalaties... who knows... probably not related but something to chew on.

I would think as long as you are keeping an eye on the PH and other water parameters there wouldn't have been any problems as long as there was not a huge difference. I think any kind of change like that is better done slowly along the lines of acclimating your fish and corals. Of course there have been documented cases of corals having bad reactions when different salts are used, but they usually come back.

I switched without phasing in Oceanic. I do a 10 gal water change every 2 weeks. The only differences I saw were positive. Of course I have to admit that I made some other changes at the same time so its not a very scientific analysis.

Well I went to CB Pets and bought more AquaCraft salt. Thanks everybody for the discussion. I'll probably switch to Oceanic sometime if it proves to be as good as what I'm using now.

Just keep using the Marine Enviro stuff. It is great
