I need to order 2000 pounds of sand for the pond. I am still waiting on a reply from Yard Right, but I doubt one ton will take care of any minimum purchase.
Assuming that's the case, would anyone be interested in a group order?

I tried contacting yard right and they never would return emails or phone calls.

No kidding. Southdown's site no longer works and OldCastle's mentions nothing about sand. There has got to be a way to order this stuff!

I tried for 3 weeks. I'd check with some of the lfs in Dallas or Houston

It's going to be planted with mangroves and seagrass.

I guess they make more money selling the Aqurium Grade stuff. I ended up using beach sand and play sand from home depot.

I called the OldCastle contact number: 610-923-5000. They are trying to find out how I could go about ordering directly from them and will give me a call back. We'll see.

Have you checked on the shipping expense? That is what really adds up the cost. Those companies sell wholesale to retailers such as Home Depot. Large group orders of Southdown sand have been done before by having a local Home Depot transfer it from another store that carries it in the eastern US. Unfortunately, as they do not make any money off of it, the local guys are very difficult to deal with and it is not very successful.
Cody with Cleburne Marine in north Texas used to make trips down to Austin and was able to get sand so you might try contacting him. Also, you can order sand by the pallet from Purearagonite.com. It's sand for aquaria use.

I bought several bags of Purearagonite.com from a place in dallas. They were around $22 per bag. It's much cheaper online but the shipping will kill you.

I can get a pallet of PureAragonite sand for $15 dollars a bag shipped.
(70) 40 lbs bags come in a pallet.
If you really need 2,000 lbs and if acllaim takes 400lbs I'll take the other 400lbs.
Let me know.

Anthony Calfo talks about ordering bulk quantities of sand in his book and I believe he gives references. He ordered a truck load for his greenhouse. I'm not sure how much he got, but a truck could be as much as 20 tons. I'd look up the suppliers he listed in the book, but my copy of his book is on loan.

Correction. 24 tons!
I'm going to call again tomorrow. So far I can tell them I need 2800 pounds. I wonder if any of the aquarium stores around here would want to jump in? ;)
I am looking at a 6" sand bed. At 90 pounds per cubic foot with a bed 84" x 72", I'll need 1890 pounds. The rest will be extra (need to pot the mangroves, set up grow out tanks, etc.).

OK, if I can get this going, how will we deal with the money. It will probably take me a month or two to come up with my part. I'm thinking that once I can get a quote for both the sand and the shipping that we all split the price equally. Basically, we would be paying per bag regardless of the number of bags we each need.
Good, bad or other suggestions? I'll need the money up front when the order is placed unless you can do COD with motor freight.

Mark,
That would depend on the empty weight of the truck. The maximum allowable gross weight is 40 tons, plus there is maximum weight per axle. I've seen more than a few trucks get tagged by DOT after fueling up.

Don't think anyone in their right mind would send a truckload or even a pallet of anything COD unless you have a well established credit history with them.

Mark, last time I ordered the pallet I had to pay it in full before they shipped it. The way I did it last time was everyone paid me by the number of bags they wanted at $15 dollars a bag. If somebody wanted more then 3 bags then they would have to give me the money before they shipped the sand.
I'll be needing the sand in about 2 - 3 weeks therefore if this is going to take months I may just order what I need.

this might be a stupid question but how does this stuff affect pH in Freshwater? Logical thiniking it might be cool for a african tank or a Koi pond that may end up a shark tank/pond. Just wondering the inherriant buffering capasities.

I'm sorry about that. I'm not rich by any means and I cannot commit what money I do have without knowing a price. I suspect that my end alone will cost several hundred dollars with shipping and I cannot come up with that all at once.

OK, this is not going to happen. :(
I just got ahold of Yardright and got an answer. In order to ship this, I'll need to get a full truckload. That's 16 pallets with 70 - 40# bags per pallet. I do not have the space for 44,800 pounds of sand and it would cost several thousand to ship. The chance of me getting enough people together to offset the costs is pretty slim.
I guess I'll have to fill this tank one bag at a time. :( :(

Mark, I had stated the price was $15 dollars for a 40 lbs bag shipped. Ther are no other charges, therefore if you need 2,000 lbs that would be 50 bags @ $15 dollars each would equal $750 dollars, definately not pocket change.
I'm actually thinking of going with a Shallow sand bed therefore I'll probably just need 100 - 140 lbs. When you do have the money I recommend you get in touch with purearagonite and you can order a half pallet just for yourself for around $17 dollars a bag shipped (shipping included).
Why don't you designate an area of the pond for plants and leave the other bare bottom. This would save you money on sand and would make it easy to siphon out junk.
