I paid 25 for a locally split one that was 6" wide all the way around. it's beauuuuutiful.

I personally think people should have low prices when selling captive raised anything, it supports the hobby in numerous ways.
Gouging for tank raised livestock sucks.

Congrats!

TurboBrett - perhaps one day when marine captive breeding is in high gear like fresh water, the prices will be lower. Till then, I'm ok with paying through the nose for captive raised because it supports the hobby and new captive breeding efforts. It is NOT cheap to captive raise as there are many lost hours and scrapped systems in learning to do it productively. Considering the cost you have in just one tank, imagine tanks that are so well tuned and fish in such condition that they spawn on a regular basis. Not just one, but many. Then imagine if you think 3 fish in a 30 gallon is about right, how much it costs to set up a 3000 gallon system for 300 fish. We could just stop captive breeding and then be faced with what is happening to the seahorse right now. Unless there is success to a large extent with them at this point, you can expect them to go to $100 and more now. Unless something changes, they will soon only be kept by the very rich and by large zoos if what I heard is correct. I hope that you can bear it during these early years of breeding so that the prices can come down so that many people can still enjoy this hobby. In fact, there are many of us within MASST who give some things away and these help to offset the costs overall.

Prafferty, I forgot to mention above, those are awesome rose anemones :)

Instar,
Yes you are correct; it isn't cheap in large scales. I was speaking towards the small-timer market, not large aquaculturing-specific operations.
I read the fish breeding forum on reef central regularly and some of those setups are crazy and expensive.
ORA for example is a very large operation as we all know and it has awesome pricing and I have had many corals from them.

With that being said, all of my home grown frags are in between $5 and $15 each depending on size because that is what I would expect to pay someone else for the same frag. I do not breed fish, inverts, or anemones, just propogate corals from time to time.

Just my ethics; I do not buy $50 frags nor do I sell them. I do not have a large operation to pay for either though. Just my time investment which I donate for the sake of supporting the inexpensive frag market. :)
