You could always go with a larger pump and divert some of the flow back to the sump.

I would run the 9 and a refugium instead of just a standard sump. A prefilter would be nice, but avoid bioballs, ceramics, and other such media. They will cause havoc in the reef when they get a couple months old and start producing phosphates and nitrates. Unless you love water changes. I hear Dan does great work and can probably make that killer sump into a killer refugium easy enough by adding a couple baffles.
