After months of searching I found a Sargassum Trigger for my Reef Tank! He's locked in the rocks right now.

AquaTek in Austin found him. I tried every place online and then asked them to look about 3 months ago.

I can't get a whole pic of him. The blue throat beat him up pretty good. They seem to be buddies now. The sargassum is still checking out the tank. I find it odd that the blue throat will let a firefish take food from his teeth, but he will beat up the sargassum.

Just the similar size / shape thing. Sargassum are not quite as hardy as other triggers I'm told but sounds like they worked things out - remember this is not generally a reef fish like many other triggers.

He seems to like Mysis. My book, A PocketExpert Guide to Marine Fishes, shows them as a reef safe trigger. I'll keep you posted on how he does.

Has anyone ever used Ocean Nutrition Trigger Formula? (http://www.oceannutrition.com/products/formulafoods/triggerformula.html) The sargassum's color is a little off. It has sea urchin, clam and other meaty foods. My book shows him as a white body, not green. Does anyone else know what their true color is?

He seems to have the upturned mouth typical of supposedly "reef safe" triggers.

He finally came out today!

GaryP; I did a lot of research on the Blue Throat and Sagassum. I haven't found anything where they have eaten reef buddies. The most I could find was a small pep shrimp added after the triggers was eaten in a tank on RC.

That is awesome looking fish, as well as the blue throat. For everyone's info, CB Pets had a Sargassum a couple of months ago.

That figures there was one in SA when I was looking.

What other triggers are reef safe? I've always wanted a trigger, but have been afraid of them eating shrimp, crabs...do they eat corals and clams? I'm sorry for the stupid question but I've always steered clear of them so I don't know much about them. Which would be the most safe one to consider?

Blue Throats, Cross Hatch, and Sargassums. Some people say ******s and Pink Tails. I have clams SPS, LPS, shrimp etc. The Blue Throat is huge. He eats frozen krill. He lets my cleaner shrimp clean inside his mouth. But if I put ghost shrimp in the tank he'll go nuts trying to catch them.
