i am doing a 55g fish only with live rock, hopefully with not too aggressive fish. right now I have a scarlet hogfish in there which is a peaceful fish. am going to do maybe a dwarf angel and another fish or three. i was reading about yellow tailed damsels and how they are supposedly the least aggressive of the damsels. I would really like to have some of these in the tank but wanted to get y'all's feedback on them. also, how do you tell males from females, as I would like to have a pair. thanks for any info you can offer (pro damsel or con). thanks.

All the damsels I've had, including the yellow tails, like to chase around the other fish. Fun to watch, but I'm sure the other fish getting annoyed.

I've had the same three yellow-tailed Damsels since I set up my tank a year and a half ago. Aside from brief spats between newly introduced fish and the damsels, they keep to themselves and do their thing. I like them. Very colorful.

We have a 55 gal, lr,ls,corals, Tang, Maroon Clown/anemone, Blue Velvet Damselfish, Yellow Tail Damselfish, snails, Scarlett Crabs, and blue legged Crabs. They all get along fine. We have a lot of rock therefore a lot of caves. Maybe that is what helps.

I practically tore down a 180 just to pull out one of these bugers. They are MEAN to newcomers.

I once had a 42hex with about 18 damsels in it, that was the most exciting tank I've ever had!!!! All they did was chase each other around allday!!! If you want a great damsel, I would recomend the talbots damsel!! Cheap, colourfull, and stays pretty and mild on the agresion level :) Stay away from velvet damsels, thats how I got my screen name, he was a bad, bad, BAD!!! fish!! He was about 5 1/2 inches when some a**%&#@ decided it would be funny to pour beer into my tank!!! Tank crashed everything died, have never kept a damsel since :( But I will very soon!!

if youre looking to get a really calm damsel you could try allens damsel fish, i have three and these guys are super calm semi passive fish yet still fight amongst themselves but never seem to cause each other damage

I had the three yellow-tailed damsels in with numerous other fish in a 30 gallon flatback Hex tank, and lots of LR/hiding places. I've recently upgraded to a 75 gallon tank with more LR, so they're still happy. I also purchased a small school of 5 green chromis at the same time as the tank. Everybodies happy....

I love this guy. I never keep a tank without them. I always have two or three. They spawned regularly in my tank. They are not agressive, at least not in my 100 g and my 450 g tanks.

Mine picks on the newer fish, but after awhile he will get use to them, that is until its feeding time. The new fish usally will hang out with my clown fish, the clown fish protects new fish until they get settle down :D
