Why do most people shy away from these in sump pumps? Are they not reliable? Do they put too much heat into the water? If you know please let me know.

They used to have wiring issues and were a rather 'shocking' pump.
I run multiple Rio pumps without a problem.

I hav epersonally never had a problem with them. Buthave heard horror stories of them actually exploding, I don't know how much weight to put in that... I bought aused one from Austin Aquarium, a Rio 1100, I use it for water changes so i don't have to lug a 5 gallon bucket over the tank and then spill most of my water.

I've personally never had problems with them either. They say the things go into a melt down and a bunch of the internal greases/oils get put into your system if this happens.
Like I said, never had it happen to me but plenty have and I'm not sure if they've fixed the problem or not.

i had a few tanks running on rios and when we would have a storm and the lights went out, after they came back on the rios did'nt. i would have to go and take them out of the sump, take them apart, clean them up and put them back. what a pain. of course at the worst possible time.

They fail often, they have serious electrical problems, and are generally cheap pieces of crap. I'm amazed nobody has sued TAAM for injury/damages by being shocked using them in salt water. Does that answer your question?

I've got multiple Rio800s doing this or that, that I've been using for 3-4years ...
Given the oppurtunity, I would go with the MaxiJet1200s
(although I've havn't had the oppurnity to use them yet)
I've had one Rio leak current into the tank. Took me awhile to figure why I was getting this
tingling sensation every time I put my hand in the water. Not a comforting thought to think
what may have happened if it leaked a little more?
(all it takes is one bad pump .... )
They also don't like to be turned on and off very often... often get stuck trying to come back on ...

i have had enough personal experience with those pumps. there is only one rio pump thats worth something, and that's their little one that i use on my skimmer. every other rio pump i've ever had, has leaked electricity into the tank, shocking but true!. i've seen the end result of a rio pump that self destructed, and killed everything in the tank. but if you like to gamble, or have no fear of death, get a rio pump!

Rio pumps have limited pressure worth so as a sump pump they don't return much to the tank. Not the greatest choice for the sump IMO. If not taken care of very gently (not picked up by the cord, etc.), that seal around the electric line into the motor coil can break. It can also leak salt water into the motor and break down and thats what all the above oil slick and shocks are about. I have one and its a bit on the noisy side. Soon to be replaced with a Mag5. Then this rio can pump something where it can't hurt so much. I threw one other pump in the trash can - an 802 Hagen thing. Another piece of crap IMO.
